This lady has been needing a repot for a little while! Look at those roots!

Here she is in a bigger self watering pot from the same seller, they're very good. Very excited to see how much she grows. It's wild that she got another slightly smaller leaf fully out while the really big one is still struggling to finish unfurling though 😅 I didn't even know that could happen

We're switching one of our struggling monstera to semihydro + moss pole soon, and I've done a wild amount of research and prep for it.

I need to be able to explain what we're doing well to Dave bc he's helping me with the actual physical tasks side of it too, so I made this drawing to explain The Vision of it

That's the eventual goal for the final set up. Ideally I'll move it to the bedroom eventually with its own dedicated vertical grow light. I would just really love one really big, nicely established monstera 💜

But seriously there's so much to learn about semihydro and hydroponic growing my head hurts lol

In your experience which plants do best in semihydro?

Alocasia do great in semihydro! They're one of the reasons I got into it ☺️ They do really well in pon (a mix of pumice, lava rock, and zeolite)

Monstera also grow very well in semihydro, especially LECA. They're very resilient and tend to transition really well.

In general, bigger plants with thicker roots are well suited for LECA, and smaller plants or plants with thinner roots do well in pon. Often I mix some pumice with my pon for kind of a middle ground option.

My bird's nest fern is doing really well in pon, and I definitely want to try more ferns.

Other plants that are often grown in semihydro, but that I don't have personal experience with yet - Philodendron, Hoya, and Pothos.

Been toying with the idea of getting my first growlights this winter. Still on the fence about it. On one hand, I can let my plants go semi-dormant, like in past years. This means that I will also get a break.(🙌🏻 for Team Lazy-Pants!) Buuut, having growlights mean the plants can get some 👏gains👏 in the off-season. What to do? Suggestions?
