I'm starting to question being kin, but I'm having the same problem I have when trying to figure out my gender: everyone else seems so sure, and I just don't know how they can tell. I know I fit the definition of synpath for a few characters, but kin has so many definitions and some of them are so vague, how can you tell you're kin with someone/something? I love your blog btw!!!
alright so i’m not *exactly* sure if i’m the best person to come to with this, but maybe i am since i just recently found out that i’m kin with people too (like summer of last year?) and i’m gonna preface this with how sometimes i’m not too sure if i fit the definition of what a kin is? like, i follow a lot of people who are kin with others and they’re always talking about kin memories and stuff like that, but i’ve never experienced that.
however, that being said, is a very strange feeling when i get a new kin, and one that i’m gonna try to describe but might fail cause it’s so weird. for me, i have a lot of characters that i love. and i’m just like “i aggressively love this character” but then there are other times where it’s “i love this character so much but it’s not a love that’s normal, it feels much more personal” and i kinda bounce it around for a little bit before actually deciding. there hasn’t been too many times where i had figured out that i wasn’t kin with the character, it was more of a blend of personal and love that was actually just love, but most of the time i can figure out pretty quickly if i’m kin with a character just because i can see them and go “me”.
another thing that i recently found out is that a lot of my kins seem to have a similar or overarching character theme, with that theme being identity questioning. it’s something that i’ve experienced a lot myself, especially with my gender and my sexuality/romantic preferences, so it might help you if you see if there’s a general theme your kins or synpaths fit that might make it easier! (but obviously don’t stick to just that theme, as you can have characters that don’t fit that. my example would be dammek for me, although i haven’t gotten much in character for him so it’s always possible the theme could hold up but even still)
also, i was talking with my girlfriend, and she said to let you know that she’s in the same boat as you. she’s kin with kanaya, but she said that “reading her dialogue makes me remember how different we are (and slightly uncomfortable), but i am very much kin with kanaya because of her kindness, her attitude, and her incredible gayness and i enjoy being called kan.” she also said that it also comes down to “if you feel happy being that character and what label you want to use”.
