Shades of Gray [Charley & Rodney]
Charley had lost track of the days since the fall of the prison. The first place she felt she had made a difference, and now she was alone again. Alone with her grief and her memories. Alone with time to think about Evan and Sammy, and all the mistakes she'd made along the way. Sometimes the memories were too much, and she held the Beretta in her hand, lifting it to her temple, knowing she was too cowardly to take the easy way out.
And now she was winding aimlessly down the abandoned railway tracks to Terminus. The end of the line. The point where all tracks met. She was terrified of what she'd find there. Another monster like Philip Blake? Another home like with the people at the prison? She shook her head. It wouldn't be that simple. It could never be that simple. Not again.
The world wasn't black and white anymore. There were shades of gray that threatened to overwhelm her at every turn. And now she was coming up on the one place she both feared and adored. Terminus, the building read. Terminus. This would be the end of the line for her no matter what the fences held inside.
She fingered the cool metal against the skin of her stomach, ready to pull it out if necessary, but it was eerily quiet. Too quiet. She gave an involuntary shudder, taking smaller steps in hopes of putting off the inevitable. It was too much to hope that anyone that she'd grown to know and love could be inside already. Wasn't it?
