So Long a Letter, published in 1979, is a semi-autobiographical novel originally written in French by the Senegalese writer Mariama Bâ. This novel is in the form of a letter, written by the widowed Ramatoulaye and describing her struggle for survival. The letter is occasioned by the sudden death of Modou, Ramatoulaye’s estranged husband.
