Artist Statement for Senior
This collection, inspired by collectors and their collections, is a visual representation of someone’s well organized mess of things, bringing up the idea that collecting and meticulous organization can be used as a therapeutic activity.
For those worried or stressed about their responsibilities in life, there might be some tension relief in finding and collecting objects that would make them feel more prepared. It has been found that collectors and hoarders are filling a void that a previous traumatic event had created. These people might have had something in one of their earlier stages taken from them, such as a loved one or a home. In order to feel safe and secure with themselves again, they start collecting. This is to have something tangible to put their trust in and also to feel prepared and stable if anything happens again. Collectors often keep their belongings close to themselves and find dominance and security in being able to organize and add to their collections.
Many people collect, but each person has a different way that their collections are organized and arranged. Some may collect by color, by type, by event (souvenirs), or for security (stocking up on materials). People will also have many different methods of storing and displaying their possessions. For this collection, the various forms of the piece will explore the different “what,” “how” and “why” of people’s collections.
