It’s evening. / There’s been a heat wave for days. / You’re in a village. / There’s a hostile feel to the place.
The sky darkening does little to take away any of the oppressive heat of the place; by Hektor’s current experience the nighttime just makes it slightly less intolerable. There’s little use to complaining except for the fact that it gives him something to do when this is a mission conducted in loneliness. Few people have been seen around in the tiny settlement he’s been stationed in. If something’s scaring them off, that’s one thing. But there’s something odd in the part where window curtains and shutters seem to flutter closed just before he passes by, and those few people he’s managed to corner into speaking with him always reply with bitten sentences and the distinct impression that if he doesn’t leave them free to leave in the next twenty seconds they’re going to punch him and run.
It’s unnerving, just a little bit. But he’s seen a lot of unnerving things, and he’s not freeing himself to leave until whatever problem this place has is solved-- that’s the task he was given. Hektor isn’t one to give up solely because of a feeling (no matter how heavy and oppressive that feeling may be).
The spear is out because he feels itchy, like if there’s not a weapon in his hand then there needs to be, an anticipation of something uncertain but something nonetheless. Hektor fiddles with it to keep himself preoccupied, blade tossed or moving in slow, purposeless arcs as he walks a sort of unconscious patrol.
Maybe it’s the creeping defensiveness or the general surprise of seeing someone where they shouldn’t be that puts Hektor on the knee-jerk offensive when he sees someone out at this time, who speaks to him not only abruptly but first, without Hektor having to start something as he’s been forced to all the previous times he tried to associate with the villagers. An expression of alarm and a quick jerk of the spear blade upwards to point directly at this interloper’s chest-- before Hektor realizes that this one, funnily enough, had no obvious hostility towards him.
The surprise fades, and the blade of the spear lowers back to point once more at the dirt below their feet. Hektor laughs apologetically. “My apologies, you startled me.”
A short pause, where Hektor regards the stranger thoughtfully. He looks young... hm. “I’ve been here for a few days and haven’t run into you before. Are you passing through? If so, I’d like to ask you if you’ve heard anything about this place.”
