He had placed a new pouch into the pipe when walking into the front door of their shared cabin. The man sucked in the fumes and stood there, tasting its harsh undertones before exhaling, vaguely enjoying the kick as it scratched his throat just perfectly.
“Leah?” He called out of interest.
She was usually hovering around the house whenever he came back. If not, she was at the door, ready to greet him with eventful news about her day or quick inquiries about meals.
So when he was greeted with an empty house, it spiked up some interest.
“Leah,” Angel Eye said louder, approaching their shared bedroom, “Are you in there?”
His fingers had just caressed the doorhandle when he gained a weary reply back.
“I-I’m okay!”
His apathetic face creased with sudden concern.
Her words were hurried and quick – like a jab in the guts. She sounded so similar when experiencing a rough episode of anxiety and panic, in the past… And it was always when he was absent, to his distaste and annoyance, but he understood her survival instincts to be sharp and sometimes overwhelming.
“Can I come in?” He’d ask in a low voice.
The background noise of Leah lurking from her hiding place distracted him, until the door was opened.
“Yes, yes… I’m okay.” The girl rubbed her nose and gave him the weakest of smiles. But Angel knew all too well. He could read her like a book.
The pipe fell from his mouth as he held it tightly.
“You’re not okay.” Simply said the man. He took her shameful silence into consideration and welcomed himself into the dismantled bedroom with sheets all over the floor and the bed pushed against the wall, giving her a safe hiding spot from the overwhelming panic. Angel observed the state before pointing towards the bed. “Come sit with me.”
Leah contained the frog in her throat that throbbed for more and more tears. Her legs frailly followed his steps, and within a second of being quiet, she was surprised to have his hands grab her hips and push her into the space beside him.
She was going to speak but Angel held up her chin and lowly made some noise again.
“Open your mouth.”
There was no energy in her to ask why, so her mouth fell open numbly.
“Mhm… There you go,” He placed his pipe between her dry lips and encouraged her mouth to close, “There you go. Take a breather, Leah. This’ll calm you.”
“It just happened…” Leah blubbered out, in between hits of his pipe.
“I know it does.”
“I-I was trying to hunt and… And…”
“Stop talking and smoke.” Angel advised, his hand still sitting on her jaw while the other one caressed her hip.
When she was told to shut up, her eyes fell dull again, mumbling under her breath, “I want to talk to you.”
“Stop talking, sweet.” He kissed the tip of her nose as his moustache nuzzled against the bridge, accidentally tickling Leah who crunched up her face. Though she was used to his moustache grazing her skin since it was a pacifying feeling, even if it was uncomfortable at times. Especially when he spoke against her.
Nonetheless, she stayed silent and smoked the patch of his pipe.
It was oddly calming – which he was right about shutting her up, because in a matter of seconds, she was breathing slowly – sinking into his side while Angel stared at the smoke that would descend from her nostrils and mouth.
He waited until she was ready to talk instead of blubber out broken lines. Mainly so he could understand her, but also because he couldn’t risk getting a migraine after the long day he had experienced. She also knew he couldn’t rest well with migraines; and all he wanted to do now was rest. With her.
“This is a strong pouch…” Leah would comment, taking a last hit.
“Don’t like it?” He smirked.
“No, it’s okay.”
“That’s my girl. Stronger the pouch, better the taste.”
Her spirits were lifted at the small praise and she looked at him, taking the pipe out of her mouth and pushing it into his empty hands, her fingers feeling his.
The girl was quiet but her voice were filled with grace and passion. It was a loud gesture of love.
“Thank you.”
Angel stared down at her with a grumble of his own, “You’re always welcome, Leah.”
