Burnout hits
You’re sitting in the back of a van, cheek pressed against the cold window, makeup still half-done from rehearsal, eyelids burning with exhaustion. The girls are chatting quietly around you, but your phone keeps buzzing—team emails, track walk reminders, an updated call sheet for rookie media.
“Y/N,” Minji’s voice cuts through softly. She’s leaned forward in her seat, studying your tired face. “Did you sleep at all on the flight back?”
You shake your head. “No time. I had to go through sector notes for Suzuka.”
Hanni snorts. “Sector notes? You can barely keep your eyes open.”
“I’m fine,” you mutter, because that’s what you always say. But even as the words leave your mouth, your body betrays you—your eyes sting, your chest tightens, and suddenly it feels like the walls are closing in.
You don’t even realize you’re crying until Danielle’s hand gently grabs yours.
“Hey, hey—it’s okay.” Her voice is gentle, grounding. “You don’t have to be fine all the time.”
Haerin reaches over and wipes your cheek with her sleeve, like it’s nothing, like it’s normal. And Hyein, of course, tries to lighten the mood: “Don’t cry now—you’ll ruin the eyeliner noona worked so hard on.”
You laugh through the tears, but it doesn’t stop the ache. Two worlds pulling at you, both demanding everything.
The grid steps in
It’s later that weekend, and you’re in the paddock, yawning so hard your jaw pops. Rookie briefing finished ten minutes ago, and you’re sitting on the floor with your helmet in your lap, trying not to fall asleep.
Oscar walks by, does a double-take, and crouches down.
“You good?”
You nod blearily. “Just tired.”
“‘Just tired’ as in ‘I haven’t slept in 36 hours’?” he asks, eyebrows raised.
You don’t answer. He sighs and plops down next to you.
“Nap. Right here. I’ll wake you before the drivers’ parade.”
You blink at him. “On the floor?”
He shrugs. “Better than collapsing mid-race.”
Later, Charles catches you eating nothing but an energy drink and a pack of crackers.
“Non, non, non.” He snatches the can out of your hand. “This is not food. Here.” He passes you his own meal-prep box. “Eat, petit.”
Even Max—blunt as always—throws a protein bar at your head when he sees you rehearsing TikTok dances in the paddock instead of resting.
“You want to be fast on track or on TikTok? Choose.”
And Kimi, who’s basically in the same boat as you, gives you quiet solidarity. “We’ll figure it out together, yeah? Lap notes, sleep schedules, everything. You’re not alone.”
NewJeans’ quiet support
Back in Seoul between races, you collapse on the practice room floor after running through choreo. Sweat drips down your temple, your chest heaving.
“Y/N-ah,” Minji says firmly. “That’s enough. Go home.”
“But I—”
“No.” She doesn’t raise her voice often, but when she does, everyone listens. “You’ve done enough today. More than enough.”
Hanni sits next to you, handing you a water bottle. “You don’t have to prove yourself to us. We already know how hard you’re working.”
Danielle leans down, peering into your tired eyes. “And we’re proud of you. Both as our member and as a driver.”
Haerin simply pats your back, quiet but steady. Hyein stretches dramatically on the floor and grins.
“Yeah, because even if you forget half the choreo, the fans will just scream ‘Y/N DRIVE FAST!!’ and forgive you.”
You laugh, weak but genuine. The girls make it feel lighter somehow.
The announcement
You’re scrolling your phone in the team motorhome when the press release drops.
“NewJeans will perform at the Singapore Grand Prix Opening Show.”
You nearly choke on your water.
“WHAT?!”
Your team principal walks by, smirking. “Better warm up those vocals, kid. You’ve got a double-shift that weekend.”
The group chat with the girls explodes.
Hanni: Y/N WE’RE PERFORMING AT YOUR RACE?!?!?!
Hyein: rookie driver by day, idol by night. you’re living a kdrama.
Minji: focus. we need to be perfect. this is huge.
Danielle: ✨two dreams colliding✨ I’M SO EXCITED
Haerin: …don’t stall on stage.
Hype Boy live @ Singapore GP
The stage is glowing under the Marina Bay lights. Thousands of fans, mechanics, engineers, even drivers crowd around. The air smells of fuel and adrenaline.
The music drops.
You and the girls step forward in race-inspired outfits—cropped race jackets, pleated skirts, and sneakers. The audience screams.
The first verse flows out smooth, Hanni leading with her bright vocals. You slot into formation, body moving on instinct despite the nerves. Out of the corner of your eye, you catch Lando practically screeching from the pit wall:
“Y/N LET’S GOOOOO!”
By the pre-chorus, the grandstands are swaying. You glance at the garages—mechanics clapping along, Charles filming with his phone, Pierre and Yuki doing terrible fanchants, Max nodding slightly like he’s trying not to admit he likes it.
When the chorus hits, you feel the electricity ripple through the crowd. Fans scream along, the drivers bounce in place, and the pit lane is one massive rave.
You’re breathless but grinning, singing into the mic while your team waves at you from the garage. Your engineer holds up a sign: HYDRATE BEFORE FP1.
The final pose hits, and the crowd roars. You bow with the girls, heart racing, adrenaline mixing with nerves for the race ahead.
The aftermath
Back in the paddock, the chaos continues.
George: “That was class! Can you teach me the choreo?”
Pierre: already uploading TikToks.
Oscar: “Okay but are you SURE you can race after that?”
Kimi: deadpan “She’ll be fine. She’s insane.”
Lando: “Bro, I’ve never screamed so loud in my life.”
Max: “Alright, enough. Let her rest before she misses Turn 1.”
NewJeans swarm you in the garage, all sweaty and giddy. Minji hugs you tight.
“You did it. Both worlds. You’re really doing it.”
And for the first time in months, you believe her.
