Terminated For Nothing
Being terminated is probably the hardest and harshest message you would ever receive in your working life. I mean what can be worse than losing your livelihood? You may have some deduction, warnings or even suspension but you still have a job. Once you are terminated, there is no turning back. You need to find a new job already.
But what if it is not your fault? Or in my case, I have not committed any wrongs or violated any policy. So why does the company have the right to terminate my service? As they put it, it is a management prerogative. I think the law has given the employers way too much control over their employees.
As per my company, it is an authorized cause which means it is valid cause of termination allowed under the law. When the company installed new machines or deploy better cost effective measures, there may be additional manpower that the company may no longer require and they can terminate their service under the reason installation of labor saving device.
So right now, they are offering me 6 and half months of compensation for my dismissal. Is that fair? I have been working there for more than 3 years now and I am a regular employee. As far as I know I cannot be anyhow dismissed. So should I accept the 6 and a half months of pay? Although the HR says that is way more than what the labor law requires the company to pay. Should I believe?
Well, I guess I also don’t have much of a choice but to accept their offer. Since after calling the DOLE, they also said that the company is giving me a good severance package, or what they call separation pay in the Philippines. So because of the company new initiatives, I am terminated. But what to do? That’s life. And I definitely need to find a new job soon.
