The first time I heard Tornado by Sara Groves, I could relate so well -  the singer surely knew someone just like my husband.

Last time, I shared how my family came to buy the house that three of the four of us still occupy.

After two decades of his erratic chaos, he finally careened away, like a malicious Tasmanian Devil, to wreak havoc elsewhere.

We’re grateful as can be he’s moved on.  At last.

But we keep waking up in the aftermath.

You see, this old house we bought seven years ago?  The one with the room-to-breathe yard, that seemed like a stroke of good luck as we were faced with eviction – through no fault of our own – that house turned out to be the future scene of some terrible events.  Events I may yet share in future posts.

For the moment, though I need to confess something to you…

This house? It’s the real reason I started this blog.

You see, when he abandoned us, I’d been a stay-home mom for 15 years.  I had no college degree.  My self-confidence lay in ruins.

I could hardly function, could barely make a simple decision.

There were just two hundred dollars I’d had the forethought to keep hidden from him, in my checking account – because if he didn’t know it was there, he couldn’t steal it and leave me penniless.

The three of us were abruptly left alone to fend for ourselves one day…he left mewith no income, and bills to pay… in early December – Merry Christmas! He felt I deserved that payback - remember, nothing was ever his fault - but we’ll get to that story, eventually. I took the first job offered me, a couple months post-abandonment.  Very low-pay work that I was terribly overqualified for - but better than nothing, right? To his credit, he continued to pay the small mortgage for the next eighteen months, right up to the month our youngest turned eighteen.   Call me a skeptic, but I’m certain he didn’t do it out of love, or a sense of responsibility for us – he did it, as was his habit, to cultivate the good opinion of others… and in particular, to convince my replacement that he was a loving father.

What he really needed? To create the illusion for all that HE was the real victim… But I digress – That house with the ginormous yard also had a septic system… that, I found out last fall, is as old as the house…

…and has been slowly failing for at least the last two years. Yep, there’s still one last mess of his to clean up – and it’s a foul one. 

You see, the house with the ginormous yard, is in a neighborhood of homes with similar ginormous yards, is so far out from the heart of the mid-size city where I live, that it’s zoned semi-rural.   Each house built south and west of certain boundaries, back in the 1950’s, were connected to city water lines – but not to the city sewer system.   Every house gets rid of waste water through an underground septic system… with big yards and hilly terrain, that’s just what the houses ended up with. No one remembers quite why...

Septic tanks, I learned later, need to routinely be pumped every two or three years. But we’d never – quite – had the necessary fee of $200 to spare in the four years prior to my husband’s abrupt departure that December day. Life with Captain Chaos virtually ensured poverty standards of living. Incapable of saving money, he habitually used check cashing companies to cover the unexpected expenses that can always be counted on to crop up - for those without any money set aside. Today, I earn roughly twenty thousand dollars a year less than he did at the time he left – yet I’ve maintained my “shit happens” fund and paid the same bills that he made so very difficult to keep up with… a happy effect of my new, much improved, peaceful life.

Understandably, some things simply didn’t get taken care of properly as the three of us slowly came back to life in the months that followed his departure. In my defense, the toilet never did flush quite right – faint subterranean gurglings grew over time – and only subsided for a time, after I dumped in a box of RidX each month. The gurglings reached an alarmingly ominous volcanic rumbling as foul-smelling, dirty water began to erupt into the bathtub.

Yes, it was that disgusting – “Ewwwww,” as my daughters say. For months before, I tried to ignore the faint whiffs of sewer stink in that big backyard when we ventured back there to mow… when the bathroom sink eventually refused to drain, we just quit using it (and I added sink repair to my  growing list of things to fix) … Because one thing I knew how to do was COPE - and settle for ever-worsening conditions.  That’s what life with my Toddler Frog Prince had been reduced to:.. Just a series of things I learned to cope with...

The septic finally got my full attention back in October, 2015 - when the toilet simply, stubbornly, refused to flush one more time. I knew that day was coming.  Knew it but could only stare helplessly into the backed up toilet, like a deer revealed in a car’s high beams, moments before the impact. I sighed… and, begrudgingly, knew it was time to dip into my emergency funds – which I’d long called my “shit happens” fund.

Ironic, isn’t it? In a house this old, a lot of shit happens that I must pay someone to fix, if I can’t do it myself:  a $300 repair on the furnace one cold winter morning , a stopped up kitchen sink, the purchase of a chain saw to take care of fallen tree limbs, etc, etc, ad nauseum…  or necessary car maintenance and repairs.  

And I purchased a replacement car, too, at one point. I know, I know – I put it off too long. WE put if off too long.  But finally, I took the smelly bull by the horns. 

I started making calls… first to a plumber, who quickly ran the snake and recommended I bring in the professionals that could deal with the real problem:  a full septic tank.

After kissing a wasted hundred and thirty dollars goodbye (because I was still in denial and hoped it was just a stopped up toilet), I did call the septic pros, and the long and the short of it is this: The underground septic tank?  Is constructed of concrete – and it’s old.  Like 60 years old.  And won’t last much longer. Furthermore, an important internal part, one of the two baffles, had already collapsed, according to the brave man who brought the smelly poohmobile tanker to suck out the contents of the buried septic tank We are, almost literally, up shit creek without a paddle.  The problem is that once the tank is unable  to work properly, the property owner is faced with a very costly repair job to restore a functioning septic and the all-important drain field. Guess how much that functioning septic system will cost me?  Roughly twenty-five THOUSAND dollars. Just about the same amount the previous owner had knocked off his asking price a half-dozen years ago.   Coincidence?  You decide. After three years of trying to keep up with the upkeep of an old house with a ginormous yard - I am, at last, done. Finished. Kaput. Finito. Over it. We three – a mother and two grown daughters of 21 and 18 – need to move. And soon… summer’s fast approaching – and evidence of a failing septic cannot be hidden for much longer.

Neighbors, two houses down, had the same situation two years ago – and the county forced them to move from the house they bought fifteen years ago – condemned the property as a public health hazard and evicted them - before selling the same house with the same failed septic system (the third one!)  to an unwitting investor, who had no clue there’s not space left in the only small lot on the block to install another expensive septic tank in that yard.

That’s the rock I’m squeezed against.  On the other side, is the hard place:

You see, I am still legally bound to the man who abandoned us.   Whose name the mortgage is still in. While I’ve managed to continue making the house payments, my name is only on the title to the house.  I have little credit, and no money to pay lawyers to wrangle over property – this crappy house jointly owned with a man who virtually left his family to fend for themselves.  

Call it what you will… I don’t care about legal maneuverings or my spousal “rights” to any of what money he may still possess. It’s just a pile of (stinky) dirt, really. So here I am, determined to figure out how to pull off another move, this time all on my own. At age 52. I want it on record, all I must do to move forward. The steps and stumbles – all of it.

Anonoblogging from an unknown location - for safety’s sake. Because he still knows how to find us.  And honestly? It’s a concern. But the end to our time here is a win for the neighbors – he no longer wants this old house with the failing septic, that he reminded me repeatedly by text, after he left, was HIS house.  (It’s a win for him, as well, though he doesn’t know and wouldn’t appreciate it. Said neighbors?  Would open a can of whoop-ass on him should he return to the area.) How do I know he doesn’t want to deal with this mess he largely created? I texted him about a month ago, to tell him of the septic problems - and that I wasn’t paying again to have the tank pumped, or foot the cost to replace that fallen baffle, either.

It was up to him to take care of the septic IF he wanted the house when we moved… And I received zero response – the only time since he left that he didn’t quickly reply to one of my rare texts to him. He never can resist a chance to try to whip on me one more time... I’ve heard he’s had some health issues of some kind (alcoholism does that to a person)… and finally succeeded in becoming a stay-home, kept man – just like his Dark Father before him…. But for the three of us - we NEED a change of scenery. The very walls remind us daily that everything he touches ends up rubble and dust. So I pick up again and say I won’t look back, oh…
