Le 17ème ciel (Serge Korber, 1966)
Watched Cléo from 5 to 7
Revelatory. After becoming somewhat inured to the slew of extraordinary films I have been watching at home, this has awakened me from a slumber. How that camera dances when the music plays.
A condensation of the circadian novel (particularly Mrs. Dalloway) into an even smaller time frame, exploring the potential of filmic time to variously coincide and depart from 'real' or realistic time. Cléo inhabits time strongly, as Varda explores the imposition of social time on personhood (as Woolf does), but particularly through the anxiety oppressing those of us who wait. Flaneurie as not only drifting through homogeneous time, but as passing particular time, at the end of which there will be a particular result. Waiting as an active endeavor that reveals Cléo's personal condition, as a woman horribly aware of her positionality in time, and of its end. The death anxiety is communicated to the viewer through the wry but ominous title: we know when the story will end. Nothing new on Tuesdays appears to mean nothing new ever, as the world of the film is confined to Tuesday. Of course this expectation is shattered, as Cléo decides that time is for living, and even before the alleviation of her fear decides to wear her new hat. A refutation of the restrictions of her life in favor of the living of it. Just as, at the end, some part of the anxiety lifts. The end comes, one hour and thirty minutes after the beginning; but in the meanwhile, she lives.
I'm sorry I'm leaving, I'd like to be here with you. You are.
