Historic WW2 Remains - Research
I came across this map which shows the location of where the runway would have been in comparison to the current housing estate. It also shows the 6 main locations of where historical landmarks are around the housing estate. Despite clearly documented on map there are still left in their natural overgrown condition without the restraints of a clinical museum. I plan to visit all six locations and explore different photography concepts with each one. I also know of a seventh location which is extremely overgrown which could lead to some interesting photography concepts.
As well as visiting the documented locations I’m also going to have a look at the white areas on the map where the runway used to be as there could be some artifacts which remain. I could possibly try my own attempt at the work of Sergey Larenkov and explore the surrounds of what used to be there and what’s there now.
I could also speak to my dad and other members of the Air Cadet 618 VGS (Volunteer Gliding School) about their experiences at the air base. I think there are also a few surviving members of No. 26 (Army Cooperation) Squadron. A very famous pilot Guy Gibson who flew with the famous 617 ‘Dambusters’ Squadron wrote a book highlighting his time at RAF West Malling. Using the skills we were taught by Rob I could create a small book exploring both my photos and the personal accounts of the pilots who flew from there and connect the two.
