Serhei in the Before Crisis style & the OG FFVII style :3 (I tried at least lmao)
turning Serhei into a half-elf was narratively one of the best decisions I've ever made for his character honestly
his character was always about parroting things his higher ups believe so he could be viewed better by them (aside from those things being all he'd known). It only makes sense that he'd repeat the discrimination he faces by elves as a half-elf towards those more marginalized than him and bending over backwards for his oppressors in hopes of being seen as "one of the good ones that will be spared" when in the end he's still a half-elf no matter what, he was just lucky to be born within a high social circle and he absolutely holds that high status dear to his heart because it's the one thing that's somewhat protecting him and he's absolutely willing to look past all the abuse he faces on a daily basis if it means not being grouped with "those filthy thieving half-elves"
he hasn't realized it but the biggest reason why Nikolaï hasn't finished either him or Anastasia off yet is because of how useful they are to him
I need to draw disheveled Serhei more often...

I think it makes for a nice contrast from his usual composed clean fancy self and shows a "more real" side to him since most of his behaviour is largely a facade to avoid being vulnerable as someone who gets beaten by his boss quite regularly
he hates the idea of getting help due to that fear of vulnerability and he lives in a society where mental health is taken for granted so he just locks himself away to drown himself in liquor and hopefully forget it all. It's also ironic because as a doctor he treats others' ills when he can't even treat himself
dissociation/escapism was always what his brain would default to when faced with danger and such
