Tipu's Tiger Spoils of the Fourth Mysore War of 1799, an automaton depicting a tiger taking a bite out of a redcoat. It was built for Tipu Sultan. The British East India Company and allied forces, led by Arthur Wellesley (later Lord Wellington), won the war after it became clear that Napoleon was neutralized in Egypt. Tipu died fighting. This toy has now made its way to the V&A Museum. London, UK.

This engagement ended the Fourth Anglo-Mysore war. The ruler of Mysore,  Tipu Sultan, was killed in the action. The British captured an arsenal of the rockets Mysore employed during the war and used them as a base for the Congreve rockets.

Tipu Sultan had to surrender his two sons as hostages to the British followed by his defeat in the 3rd Anglo-Mysore war. Contemporary chroniclers like Major Dirom and Roderick Mackenzie had given a detailed account of their receptions by the Governor General Marquis Cornwallis. British artists like Robert Home (An eye-witness of this interesting event) Mather Brown and Arthur William Devis; all painted their versions of the Reception of the Mysorean Hostage Princes by Marquis Cornwallis.

Who came to power in Mysore after Tipu Sultan's death?

After the fall of Tipu Sultan on 4th May, 1799, the British took possession of his family and treasures. Tipu's eldest son Fateh Hyder surrendered himself to General Harris [Commander-in-Chief of the army which stormed Srirangapatna], in the hope that the British would place him in his father's dominions. But what happened next? Whom did Lord Wellesley chose? the heir of Hyder and Tipu or the heir of the ancient Rajas of Mysore? What happened to Tipu Sultan’s sons?

Benjamin Gaunt, aged 81, now living at Pudsey, near Leeds, was in the 33rd in India, under Colonel Wellesley, and on the night previous to the siege of Seringapatam, this veteran bore the Duke on his back about a quarter of a mile, he being slightly wounded in the knee or thigh. He was one of the orderlies in the 33rd.
