i finally got around to scanning some of the silkscreen prints i made a few months ago! it's titled "Off-Topic".
this was a two-screen print; one screen was used for the text/outlines, and another screen for the rainbow and AnimeFreakz logo. when printing the rainbow wolf's color, the AnimeFreakz logo was taped over, and vice versa.
a detailed rundown of my thoughts behind the piece below the break!
i took a printmaking class as an elective in my last semester of undergrad. the goal was to both challenge myself and experiment with art in new ways. this wound up being a rather difficult process! all of my classmates had years of experience of art and were majoring in studio art. meanwhile, i had been doing some digital art on-and-off for like 6 months when the class started. i was frustrated at how my prints never seemed to come out right.
when it came time for silkscreen, i decided to try something different and leaned into my status as an amateur artist. most of our previous printing methods had been focused on detailed, beautiful lines. i wanted to try depicting the text-based world of an internet forum instead. and what could be more 'amateur' than a child's MS Paint sparkledog?
i've got a strong interest in researching digital culture and what not. with the emergence of "webcore" and similar trends, there's been a kind of romanticization of the forum, a desire to RETRVN or whatever. this isn't necessarily a critique of that, but it is attempting to depict forums as i remember them: places for nerds to be oddly hostile to each other for falling outside of an arbitrary line. drawing a magical girl's cat sparkly cat familiar is fine. drawing a sparkledog is furry shit. you can get yelled at by someone named TranquilTom for not being a true Anime Freakz. it's funny! it probably also caused the child who posted it to develop some issues. both of these can be true. my goal isn't to embrace or condemn this past era of the internet, but you're welcome to read it as either.
lastly, i thought it was interesting to depict the digital world in printmaking. both prints and digital art are supposed to be infintiely replicable. printmaking was in many ways replaced by computers! to depict the straight lines of a digital UI with hand-brushed lines felt kind of interesting to me. the misalignments and different color paper are purposeful. just as these things can be infinitely replicated, these experiences of getting yelled at for posting bad as a child on a forum was replicated a lot in different places online. you can imagine each print as the same thing happening again and again, in a way.

The pallet of screens is finally here! They have been sitting in a warehouse for a bit & need a lil TLC. Whose ready to get Screenprinting!? 70+ house screens just arrived all the way from Georgia. It's time to make some amazing fine art prints! BTW do you know we do private Screenprinting parties? That's right the RCP team doesn't print t-shirts but we can teach you how! Great way to spend the evening with family & friends. We do however take commissions for fine art prints, special projects and gifts. #screenprinting #screenprint #seriography #make #fineart #uptake #upkeep #restore #fabricprinting (at Rubber City Prints, Inc.)
