Alberto Burri - Sacco S3
Today´s image is from the great Italian artist Alberto Burri.
Where to start - there are many great videos on Youtube of Burri working. This is pure drama in its own right - contrasted with the balletic performance of Pollock there is a sense of urgent purpose, a poetic danger, and a revelatory joy. What I enjoy most about Burris work is just the physical and emotional presence it has. It hides nothing - the material, the process, the surface everything is there. It is the opposite of illusion. Well, I say it hides nothing - apparently, some of his works are a bit tricky to look after. like many post-war artists, he used chemicals and materials that were new. glues and resins etc. When looking at his work it is easy to think of skin and flesh but I always think of gold even Klimt somehow he managed without even changing the colour of the burlap sacks to make them look as Nina Garcia would say ´Lux`.
I was recently at the Boros collection in Berlin - the current exhibition heavily features Serjev Jensen's giant stitched together canvases which owe a great dept to Burri.
