Today in his work, “Better Prom”, Sesnon left the art equivalent of a flaming shit on a doorstep today. His attempt at mixing themes (80s prom//90s wastoid) ended up being a weird sort of unfunny bit of assholery when out delivering the “Senior Class Historian” portion of the work.
After spending the equivalent of three movies stamping papers and furthering his carpal tunnel, he managed to ruin his labor by printing a “false address” on the package of his nearest (literally) and dearest (debatable) friend. Technically speaking, Ses had intended this particular package to be a sort of test-run, joke package. However he quickly realized that “test packages” were not necessary if the idea is thought through. He felt his usual thoroughness went away and his childlike excitement dove in without first consulting careful thought.
Ses argues that his initial idea “this will be hilarious” might still be present in the work. He hopes that his 12-year-old nature will be better received and not his 50-year-old bitterness. The art comedy climate has changed in recent years and Ses has found that his work does’t connect to a lot of people anymore.
“I just wanted to be a skater growing up,” Ses said over a Slim Jim and a red bull outside of a liquor store when we met up early April. “I thought ‘bunghole’ was funny but time’s gonna tell. I might have ruined my career.”
The other packages are still to be sent out, this time with more consideration. Ses holds firmly that “art is about trust…you gotta be ok with being ugly sometimes.” Ses said he felt today’s work was lacking in thought and vision, but this trial really made him think about his project. “It’s gonna be good,” he said. “It’s way too big to fail.”
Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery || Irwin Award 2016
These were the pieces I did for the Art Gallery that I was featured in at my college campus in the University of California, Santa Cruz. Me and eleven other Irwin Scholars featured our work together in a show entitled SELF. Our Opening Ceremony was tonight and opened the gallery to the public from now until June 11th.
