OC Kiss {Wedding}

Rae/Seth (both mine; The Outer Worlds OCs) ---

One week.

It might've made her a bad friend, but that was the prevailing thought in Rae's head as she watched Sharra hand off her bouquet and stand with her imminent husband.

One week until she and Seth got to do the same. And if thinking it at her friend's wedding made her a bad friend, carving time from her own wedding prep to be here made her a fantastic one, so it balanced.

Weddings might not be the ostentatious events of old, with scores of guests, but most people did still invite a fair number of family and friends. Vylette was handing Rae's guest list, and Rae was touched to have made it in Sharra's. With a plus one, no less. She squeezed Seth's hand and tugged it into her lap.

He leaned over as the officiant started reading the terms of marriage bond and whispered in her ear. "Excited?"

Rae nodded, following when he sat back to rest her head on his shoulder. She was excited for Sharra and Luis, of course, but even with a smaller ceremony planned than their two dozen guests, her own hung tantalizingly close.

Seth kissed her forehead and they both did their best to pay attention to the proceedings. The reading of terms, the recited vows, the sealing with a kiss as well as actual signatures.

Seated where they were, they stood at the conclusion but waited for others to leave before them. Seth wrapped his arms around her waist and tugged her close, her back to his chest. Rae hummed and rested her hands over his as she watched the other guests depart. We won't have near so many...

Seth had no family and only a couple friends who'd be able to attended, she had parents and a brother, but only half a dozen friends, and only some had spouses or partners.

"Whatcha thinking about?" Seth murmured in her ear, interrupting the tally.

"How much shorter our guest list will be," she replied, leaning her head back against his chest. "We don't have big social circles."

He huffed a laugh. "The important people will be there, though."

Rae tilted her head further to look at him. "You and me?"

Exactly," Seth said wih a grin and kissed her. Rae hummed, twisting in his arms for a better angle and wrapping her arms around his neck. They got so lost in it they didn't notice when everyone else had left and the way was clear.

She couldn't wait for next week.

OC Kiss ∙ Reunion [Rae/Seth; The Outer Worlds, both mine]

Rae paced tight loops in front of the hibernation pod, no more than three or four steps before spinning around to retrace. She still felt guilty about her request getting such high priority, no matter how many techs assured her she'd done so much for the colonies it was only fair.

(Besides, a mechanic would be useful.)

It wasn't the only source of her anxiety, though. the progression lights around the pod's viewport were taking an eternity to change from yellow to blue. Five years she'd waited for this and the last fifteen minutes were the interminable part.

Finally, though, the lights were blue, the pod door disengaged, and a very familiar pair of brown eyes blinked open under the harsh lights.

Rae stepped closer, careful not to trip on the bay's floor grates, and gently rested a hand on his chest. The cryosuit texture felt just as odd on him as hers had a lifetime ago. "Seth?"

He started, twitching toward her voice even with his eyes unfocused. "Rae?" It came out in a garble mumble, so much like half-asleep mornings at home before the Hope's ill-fated journey.

She'd waited years to hear that voice again. "Yeah." She slid her hand up to the side of his neck, guiding him to look at her, and smiled when his eyes finally focused on her face. "I've missed you."

She couldn't resist, she'd waited long enough, been through enough, and leaned in to give him a fervent, overdue kiss. their first in a new life.

Finally.

Seth pushed forward into the kiss, fumbling hands grasping for her waist, her shoulders, her face. Neither let go for a long time.

"You look older," Seth mumbled when they finally parted, foreheads resting together.

Rae laughed breathlessly and didn't tease about being rude. "There's a lot to fill you in on, but. Um. I am. We can talk about it later, though. For now..." She scraped her fingers through his beard and kissed him again, because he was here and she could. "There's a lot of this catching up to do, too."

Seth chuckled and didn't protest when she kissed him again.

And again.

And again.

OC Kiss: Dare (Rae/Seth, The Outer Worlds)

"You ever feel like your life could do with some excitement?'

"Not really, but if you're that keen for it, you could always swap labels on the doctors' lunches and enjoy the show."

"No thanks. Some of us don't have board member parents to smooth things over so we don't get fired for 'disrupting the workplace' or 'inhibiting production' and I can't afford to lose this job."

"Oh, fine. If professional life is off limits... I dare you to kiss your new boyfriend. That'll get you some excitement."

"Vy!"

"You haven't kissed yet, right?"

"Well, no, but we're going slow for a reason-"

"There's taking it slow and there's stringing you along, and at what, eight months? he's pushing it, Rae."

Despite redirecting the conversation--and Vylette's attention--to the test swabs they were collecting, Rae couldn't shake the words from circling her thoughts the rest of the day. They distracted her clear into the evening and led to Seth nudging her shoulder halfway though their dinner date. (Takeaway eaten picnic style on her living room floor because the diner was closed today and her table was still wobbly.)

"Air control to Dr. Winters, how's the view up in the clouds?" he teased, slurping a bite of noodles.

"Sorry." Rae rolled her eyes. "Though doctor's a long way off, y'know. I have a few years before I'm even eligible for any sort of promotion, I might make medical assistant inside the decade if I'm lu-"

"It was a joke, Rae," he said with a laugh, squeezing her knee. "You looked like something was buggin' you."

"Oh." She rubbed the back of her neck and debated if it was worth trying to brush off. "Just something Vy said at work, won't go away no matter how hard I try."

Seth twirled up another bite of noodles. "Anything you want to share? Would that help?"

Rae sighed, poked at the noodles and vegetables in her own bowl. "Thinks it's her job to commentate my love life."

He arched a brow. "Uh-oh. Should I be worried?"

She shook her head. "I disagree with her opinion. She dared me to kiss you, thinks we're moving too slow--but I know you don't wanna rush b'cause of Tenille" --a faint eye twitch when she mentioned his ex further steeled her resolve--"and I'm fine with the pace we're going, I promise." The words spilled in a rush as she scooted closer, legs half over his, grabbing his hand when he started to suck the inside of his cheek. "Seth. Seth, I really am." She liked him a lot, maybe even loved him, the last thing she wanted was to make him feel this, he, wasn't enough for her. "I shouldn't have said."

"I asked," Seth deadpanned. "And... maybe she's not wrong." He rubbed his beard.

"Hey, I'm not sure 'too slow' is a thing," Rae protested. "Vy doesn't know you, barely knows me, I didn't wanna give out sordid details about your jackass ex."

"And maybe she's still right," he said, tugging Rae's legs more deliberately across his lap to move them closer. "Maybe... maybe I'm hiding from something that's not a threat." He traced one thumb down her jaw. "Maybe you should kiss me."

She bit her lip at the touch, but, "Don't rush because of something a work friend said-"

He rested two fingers against her lips. "I'm not. I'm okay with this, Rae. Are you?"

Rae nodded. She'd been wanting to kiss him for weeks, but not as badly as she wanted him to be comfortable with it when it happened. "My breath smells like lo mein," she warned, wiggling closer.

"Eh, so does mine," Seth countered, eyes twinkling. "It's the perfect time. If you dare."

"Are you su-"

He kissed her, arm around her waist, hand cupping her jaw. "Absolutely," he murmured when he pulled back to breathe. "I think I'm safe with you."

The soft words made her heart dance and Rae grinned. "Then I dare you to do that again," she teased, and then smiled wide into it when he did.

OC Kiss ~ Adventure

(Rae/Seth; The Outer Worlds)

For all the comfort a routine provided, it could chafe something awful, too.

And Rae had felt a growing sense of restlessness for almost two months before she fingered that as the source. Seth, always the more... emotionally in-tune of the two of them, picked up on it just a day or two after she put together the pieces.

“So what’s wrong?” he asked after dinner, when they settled on the couch but her attention wandered from her book.

“I’m just... bored,” Rae said, sighing as the word failed to encompass the restless skritching in her chest. “Life’s just... go to work, drudge through the day, talk about it over dinner, go to bed. Stability and routine are all well and good, and I’m not bored of you,” she added hastily with a kiss on his cheek. “I just wish we got a little more excitement than one of us occasionally traveling a few cities over for a fill-in rotation before back to the same old same old.”

“Y’know, I know exactly what you mean,” Seth said slowly, linking his fingers with hers. “We’ll have to brainstorm a way out of the doldrums, huh? Shake things up a little.”

Rae hummed an agreement, head resting against his shoulder, though she was skeptical how two low-grade workers would be able to swing any sort of change to the routine demanded of them.

She should have known that her husband, who was allergic to half-measures, was thinking just a little bigger than a simple change in routine.

‘Move to a different galaxy’ bigger. ‘Join in a colonization effort’ bigger. Leave everything we know for an adventure bigger.

“It’s kinda perfect if you think about it, Rae,” he effused, nudging the brochures toward her. “Founding a colony in Halcyon is just the sort of place that’ll need mechanics” --pointed to himself-- “and doctors” --pointed to her-- “and since it’s unexplored territory, I’m sure there’s no way for it to be routine.”

“Starting over so far away is a little more adventure than I was thinking, babe...” Rae bit her lip as she skimmed the brochures, heralding a comfortable journey in cryosleep on a ship called Hope and a chance to be an integral part of history. I still have family here, remember? She looked up at Seth’s face, the hope and excitement in his brown eyes.

...It could be fun. And they’d be together, at least. And if it went well, maybe Aaron at least would join them, even if her parents were too settled to go so far. And he was right about it breaking routine.

She rested a hand on his cheek with a wink. “....but I could be convinced.”

“Well, then.” He leaned in and kissed her. “I’ll just have to convince you, hmm?”

Her hand slid around to the back of his neck, holding him close as she whispered, “I don’t think it’ll be terrible hard to get me on board.”

Maybe a good adventure, no safety net, was just what they--she--needed.

“Good to know,” Seth mumbled as he kissed her again.

Maybe it was time she saw more than one little corner of Earth.

Maybe she should take the ship being Hope as a good omen.

Seth’s fingers tangled in her hair as he pulled her into his lap. Rae’s curled deeper into the fabric of his shirt.

Maybe it would even be fun to run off, long as they were doing it together.

By the time they got up in the morning, Rae was practically ready to start packing.

Speaking of Seth, the Rae stuff I’ve done recently for @the-lastcall​ got me really thinking about him, so I went and made him in the Outer Worlds CC. I did actually create the character, but no idea when/if I’ll get around to playing him. Gotta beat WotR at least first. 😄
