Ep. 3! #Cosmos #SethMacFarland #NeilDeGrasseTyson #Science #FamilyGuy #BelieveTheTruth #Hashtag
Person of the Day: Seth MacFarland
Monday, February 25
As the host of the 85th Academy Awards show this year, Seth MacFarland's performance was said to be "mediocre" in the news this morning. Some called his act, "self-indulgent", while others described his jokes as, "sexists", "awkward", and, at times, "uncomfortable".
Regardless of the negative reviews today, the results for the ratings of the ABC telecast were very positive. In fact, according to the NYTimes, the 3% increase of viewers from last year (39.3 million to 40.3 million) made the 2013 Oscar's the most watched live entertainment show on TV in the last three years. I'd say MacFarland definitely had something to do with that...
This increase in ratings is, most likely, due to the fact that Seth MacFarland was chosen in order to attract a a wider and younger demographic of viewers. I'm sure you could ask any teen or young adult who watched the show and their reactions to the host would be widely different then the ones we are reading about in the paper today.
What did you think about the award show? Did MacFarland's inappropriate jokes take away from the talent being honored? What does it say about the younger generations in our society who thought the show was funny? Are they too open and tolerant to this offensive ridicule?
Aside from who won best actress and who was best dressed, these are all questions that come to mind the day after the Oscar's. Though it is important to celebrate all the amazing achievements of those who won, it is necessary to not overlook some of the deeper issues that the show, subconsciously, brings to light.
