June's story and character is truly the culmination of black women that have inspired me. I've been very lucky to have known so many intelligent, motivated, educated, successful ladies that I really couldn't help but convey that energy into her. She's definitely an homage to all the people who have influenced my own career path and feels very real as a character since she's directed inspired by so many people I know.
Being able to work on on a story where I have an older, successful, gay black woman as the protagonist is just so freeing. It's certainly not a common portrayal you see in media and that's what's driving to work on her story so much. It's fun and exciting to work on her story and her character because she feels both close to home yet insanely refreshing.
