It was a typical day. The family of three would wake up at the same time and barely get a simple hello in as they rushed around and got ready for work, and then it was out the door with breakfast in hand. Except, Keili stayed home. What was a 9 year old supposed to do alone? Her parents didn’t even think to hire a babysitter most days and instead equipped her with a phone and money.
This sort of scenario is the reason Keili ended up raising herself. While her parents worked, she wandered the streets of the Upper Plate. Neglect always bothered her, which is why she always got into mischief to help her forget such negative emotions.
If it weren’t for that, she wouldn’t have passed a certain building with a fire escape. At first, from the corner of her eye, it looked like paper or a plastic bag billowing in the wind. But after a double take, she realized it was a girl, not much younger than herself, dangling from the metal fixture. “Oh my god she’s stuck! Hold on I’m coming up! Try to hold on!” Keili nimbly climbed up the stairs until she was near her, a single hand outstretched while the other held on tightly to the side of the fire escape. “Give me your hand,” she instructed with a soft tone so not to frighten the other, “It’s ok, I will help you down. Don’t be afraid.”
