Her hand shook as she reached into her enderchest. How long had it been in there- how long had she forgotten about it?

The stone hoe felt heavy in her hand as she picked it up, the wood was brittle from use, splintering where stress had aged it. 

Miss Pearl?

She turned it over in her hands, as the children of Gilded Helianthia pointed to their carvings in the handle, showing where they had contributed, what each of them had done.

We wanted to help you with the fields!

“It’s beautiful.” Pearl heard herself saying again, as she looked at the shakily carved pictures.

What were their names?

Pearl froze as she stared down at the memory. 

What were their names? Her brain asked again. Why can’t you remember their names?

She searched for another memory. Famine. Fire. Panic. Fear. Prying fallen planks off of burning skin. Children crying for parents that were gone. Eyes, so many eyes, looking to her for leadership she didn’t know how to provide. 

Pearl blinked, she didn’t push the memory away. She deserved to remember it. Her mouth tasted like ash as she traced her fingers along the stone blade of the hoe. There were symbols inscribed, done by the blacksmith. An act of good will. A favor that was never intended to be repaid. A favor that could never be repaid anymore. 

What was her name? Pearl remembered the blacksmith, her hardened eyes but kind smile. She had carved these symbols. No. Not symbols. Words. They were words. Some part of her knew that. It was as unfamiliar as gibberish. The language had long since fallen away from her. She didn’t know what it said. 

She didn’t know what it sounded like.

They were gone and she couldn’t even remember the language she used to speak with them.

“Pearl!”

Could she even remember their faces? Or were they just amalgamations of each other, no longer with their own identities?

“There's no way you’re still using stone tools this far into the season.” 

The hoe was taken out of her hands and Pearl lunged, “Give it BACK!”

Grian yelped and let Pearl tear the hoe out of his hand, “Woah! It’s just a hoe!

“It’s not yours!” Pearl couldn’t stop venom from seeping into her voice. Was it even hers? She didn’t know what it said.

“Okay! Okay-” Grian raised his hands up in confused surrender, “-but you’re bleeding.”

A large splinter had embedded itself in her hand, her blood was dripping down the handle, pooling in the deeper carvings. “Go away.” she said as she began to pull the wood out of her hand, trying to remember who had cut the wood. She had known once. 

“Pearl-” “Go away.”
