Sir Merlin Fuzzybutt likes to spend mornings in the window and evenings with me. I just had an odd thought. One of the things I do is making clothing, primarily medieval. But being disabled I also look at the accessibility of clothing when I see it. (I’d do x or y and if they don’t have em, pockets!!) So I see something with a laboring woman in a hospital. Now if you’ve never done that you should know that they put snaps at the shoulders on maternity hospital gowns so moms can nurse. Which got me thinking. I’ve had 13 surgeries (and they keep forgetting to punch my customer card!) so I’ve worn a ton for f hospital gowns. You constantly have to pack a robe or use another gown as a robe to be decent when you go walkies. And with surgery they ALWAYS want you to go walkies!! Why not make four panel gowns? Put snap access on every seam. Then the medical teams can access whatever body part they need easily and patient modesty is preserved? Plus it has an added benefit. When gowns get holes in them or stains that won’t come out you don’t lose the entire gown (welllll occasionally you might). You keep the panels that are good and build new gowns from those pieces. Gown A missing left front gets paired with B needing right front, C needing left back and D needing right back. So I’m throwing that idea to the universe. What’s that? You think they’d be uncomfortable? Nah. It’s just a matter of the right fabric and seams. And thinking about it, should I ever need unscheduled surgery again, I think I might just make myself a few from linen. Linen wears well and is extremely comfortable. The key to linen is prewash, prewash, prewash! Because the more it’s washed the softer it gets. And if you take out the sizing by prewashing it doesn’t wrinkle as much. Which reminds me. I need to cut out that next tunic. Man I miss my fabric stash! #SirMerlinFuzzybutt #sewingwithlinen #rationalhospitalgowns (at Murfreesboro, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnfO5BAh-Ls/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=aiubfccooqn5
