Salmon Pie, Egg Sauce.
Foufounes, Montréal (Rosemont). December 4, 2014.
In a middle/working class residential neighborhood, on the corner of Rosemont and a smaller street (Des Érables), lies this sealed window joint open daily for early birds till 8 at night. Rubbing elbows at the counter are a string of middle-aged men, reading the paper, sipping silex coffee, and peeping at the half nude bodies of the smiling young waitresses. Tips don't come for free here at Les Foufounes, the revival of Chez Lydia - Serveuses Sexy, that once occupied the place. I had always wanted to go try that place, not so much for the kinky aspect of it or to fill my head of raunchy images, but rather satisfy a certain curiosity, about the kind of place, the kind of people and vibe to be found in such exclusive waters.
So when my friend Adam and I set for a lunch date, the occasion was perfect to try out this mysterious haven for bare butts and sunny side ups. Greeted as old friends as we entered, we sat down at the counter, like regulars. The first thing that happened after that was a girl in her late twenties maybe, in pink lingerie offering us coffee. It was noon, I wanted a beer. So we asked for a couple of Labatt 50 to which we received a big and loud uproar and the comment: "You guys must be from the Plateau!" Well, I am, but more than anything I like a good beer, whether the Plateau hipsters find it fashionable or not. The salmon pie with egg sauce seemed like a good option since I wasn't all that hungry. I couldn't see where the cook in front of us got it, but I saw him micro-wave it. It wasn't bad, but I can't say it was all that amazing. I guess it's just not the kind of place where you go to find cordon bleu cooking.
"Will you guys come back?" asked the second waitress, a young and tall brunette in her early twenties and pink lingerie.
Sure, why not?
What else could've we said.
