St. Francis College has 40+ clubs and organizations that host hundreds of events each year. One event I participated in last year was the Improv Bootcamp at SFC. While the program was only a month long, what I have gained from this experience will last me a lifetime. Here are four biggest reasons I think people should try SFC’s Improv bootcamp.
1. Confidence
When you do improv, you have to be confident. You don’t have a choice. You are performing with your partners and if you don’t already have the confidence, it WILL come to you. BELIEVE ME. How can you make your audience believe in a scene if you can’t believe in yo
urself? One of the biggest rules of improv is “always say yes,” so knowing your partner will always affirm what you say should make you more confident.
2. Camaraderie
In improv, participants are there for each other no matter what thanks to the “your partner is a genius” rule. You always have to have each other’s back during scenes because otherwise the scenes will fall apart. When you do improv, you bond with your teammates. You want to see your friends and teammates succeed in scenes, and you genuinely care about the people around you.
3. Skills
Improvisational skills are very importantin life. Obviously not everything will always go according to plan. If you can keep a cool head when things are changing, you will look smooth and collected while the person who doesn’t have improvisational skills will be freaking out.
If you can convince an entire room of people that you are Hillary Clinton on a trip to Ikea, then you can smooth over a slide presentation with some technical difficulties in your SFC class.
4. Fun!
Improv is fun and exciting! There are endless possibilities in improv, and you can do what you want because YOU are creating it! It’s fun to watch too! It’s so interesting to see a whole scene blossom from an audience’s seed. Improv never gets boring because it never repeats.

SFC’s Investment Club Is an Investment in Your Future
The Investment Club seeks to offer students real world experience in both analyzing and assessing the stock market.
“The Investment Club allows students the opportunity to learn the fundamental principles of investing using real capital provided by St. Francis College. The Club offers students with real world experience in both analyzing and assessing the Stock Market,” said Business Management major James Cafiero ’17, who founded the club.
The Investment Club works closely with the Entrepreneur Club that establishes networking events with successful entrepreneurs of small and large businesses who share their success and experiences with students who plan to follow in the same footsteps. Some of the entrepreneurs include: Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s, and Lou Pastina, recently retired Executive Vice President of the New York Stock Exchange.
The LGBTQ Club is a safe space for students of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer community. It is a place for these students to feel safe and understood. The Club is also an outlet to educate all students on LGBTQ issues going on in our community. We team up with staff and faculty that are part of the LGBTQ community and learn from these mentors. The LGBTQ Club also gives people outside the LGBTQ community the opportunity to learn more by being an ally and, essentially, create a better, more inclusive and accepting world.
The Club is necessary to the school's community. St. Francis College is a very diverse and welcoming school. However, it can be intimidating or difficult for a LGBTQ student to feel welcomed and feel free to express themselves in a Franciscan school. "Coming out" is a process that can be scary and difficult. The LGBTQ Club offers a place to alleviate some of the stress that comes with "coming out." The Counseling Center at St. Francis College has been a great resource for LGBTQ students, but often a deeper connection can be made when students are talking through their concerns with someone who truly understands what they are going through having gone through it themselves.
The LGBTQ Club has volunteered at the Hetrick-Martin Institute, a youth services organization in Brooklyn that provides counseling and legal services to LGBTQ youth. The Brooklyn LGBTQ Youth Summit, a day-long event geared toward youth that range from the ages of 13 to 24 to discuss the challenges that LGBTQ youth face and the ways in which larger institutions like St. Francis College and the Hetrick-Martin Institute can help. The event was hosted at SFC in November 2015. For the first time ever in the College's history, there was a gender neutral bathroom designated during the Brooklyn LGBTQ Youth Summit due to the strong persistent efforts of the club and its moderator.
The LGBTQ Club also hosts its own events, including a Fall event with members of the FDNY LGBTQ community who came to talk about their “It Gets Better” video, which features members of the FDNY talking about how they have dealt with their sexuality and shared their stories about growing up as LGBTQ and also making a career in the FDNY.
The LGBTQ Club will soon release its own video featuring several members of the Club discussing their "coming out" stories and their journeys as LGBTQ students here at SFC.
