Via @sgclimaterally Singapore has grown in land area by 25% since 1965 due to our constant land reclamation projects, making us the world’s largest importer of sand. This excavation of sand has devastating consequences - removing sand from rivers and mangroves has been linked to biodiversity loss. Sand mining also causes coastal and riverbed erosion which exacerbates the severity of floods. We are calling on Singapore to do better. We have reaped the benefits of reclaimed land, but neighbouring communities are paying the price. As the climate crisis worsens, we must acknowledge the consequences of our actions and seek to mitigate them. Failing to do so would mean being complicit in the destruction of land, biodiversity, and livelihoods.
