❱❭ *neighbors know my name

usually he’s a huge proponent of the saying ‘you do you.’ in fact, he practices the mantra himself, never paying too much heed to what those around him think of his choices. really, he thinks most people spend too much time living the lives society thinks are acceptable and decent - to the point that they never get to live their own. and so he respects anyone who’s got it in them to do as they please, even if it comes to a slight inconvenience to himself. in his book, a little uncomfortable is better than boring, old, and complacent.
but he too has his limits. he’s no prude by any means, and he has very realistic expectations for the level of tolerance necessary to live on-campus, particularly regarding the ‘activities’ of his neighbors on weekend nights. except this time, it’s not just any neighbor, but his next-door neighbor. and it’s not just once or twice, but several times now. at first, he thought she just had despicable taste in music; or that she should look into getting a hearing aid if she needed the volume up that high and that late at night. but somewhere down the line, he realized that the music was just a cover-up for another symphony - one of moans, groans, and others sounds of pleasure that he surely had no place or interest in overhearing.
really, he made a valiant effort to simply ignore the events next-door, but it was a futile effort -- like noticing a clock ticking in a quiet room; once you notice it, there’s no going back. no amount of his own music, asmr recordings, or mashing his head into his pillow sufficed. if anything, it only grew louder. so he wakes on a sunday morning, far from well-rested, with a pounding in his head from the lackluster night of sleep and a noticeable case of bed head from all the tossing and turning. perhaps it was an insensitive thing to do, aggressively rapping on a woman’s front door first thing in the morning. but clearly she was not one for neighborly decencies. he stands in front of her door, giving a few harsh knocks before waiting for someone to answer it. it was time to pay his next-door neighbor a not so friendly visit.
