Sgt. Splendor is the genre‑bending musical duo of Kate Vargas and Eric McFadden, a pair of fiercely original artists whose partnership blends alt‑funk swagger, desert‑roots mystique, dirty blues grit, and a carnivalesque, Tom‑Waits‑tinged sense of atmosphere. Their music feels both timeless and strange—equal parts groove, grit, and hallucinatory storytelling—rooted in their shared Southwestern upbringing and sharpened by decades of individual artistry. Vargas and McFadden moved in the same musical circles for years before officially meeting at a songwriting festival in 2018, where the spark was immediate. They began writing together soon after, eventually touring, livestreaming weekly during lockdown, and building a catalog of collaborative material that evolved naturally into Sgt. Splendor—a project that feels less like a band and more like the collision of two fully formed creative worlds. Their partnership is both creative and personal, and that intimacy shows: the songs are fearless, strange, soulful, and deeply human. Sgt. Splendor is powered by the union of Kate Vargas, a songwriter praised by NPR, Vice, Rolling Stone, SPIN, No Depression, and more for her vivid imagery, unconventional Americana, and smoky, cinematic vocals, and Eric McFadden, a restless, genre‑hopping guitar virtuoso whose résumé spans George Clinton & P‑Funk, Eric Burdon & The Animals, Angelo Moore, Anders Osborne, Jackson Browne, and other icons; together, her expressive storytelling and his flamenco fire, blues muscle, and psychedelic edge fuse into a sound that is gritty, hypnotic, and unmistakably their own.
