She cursed herself for not bringing the headlamp, because she would sure as hell need it on the way back. The trail was worn, sure, but it wasn’t really even ground, and with how dry it was, sometimes the soil shifted beneath her feet. Sam shifted her pack, cringing slightly as she heard metal clang against metal. “Please don’t be scratched,” she muttered.
The telescope contained within was one of her many very expensive prides. By the blessing of grant money, she’d been able to afford it, and she wasn’t about to see it damaged just because she picked a rougher trail than usual. The sound of leaves shuffling caught her attention, and she slowed herself, glancing briefly over her surroundings in the waning evening light, the sound of her breath and a gentle breeze greeting her. This was a public trail, right? Sure, it didn’t feel like one, but not all trails were popular, and she was just a mile or so from bumblefuck nowhere. “Yo? Anyone oUT-” there was a squeak, and a fair bit of shuffling while she tried to catch her balance, having slipped on the edge of the path.
Filed under: probably embarrassing if anyone saw that.
