Things aren’t back to normal. Things never were normal, even before Shelby slept with Lee. Raelynn just didn’t know how not-normal things were back then. But they’ve tentatively been forming a new normal—getting snacks and sodas larger than their heads at the gas station, getting milkshakes at the Chick-fil-A, wandering around the Walmart in the next town over. But they haven’t actually gone to each other’s houses yet.

“Yeah, maybe,” Shelby says noncommittally. “G’night.”

Raelynn's "we talked about a lot of things at 13. We aren't 13 anymore" to Shelby is such a poignant line. Like I know it's about how she doesn't trust her anymore after what happened with Lee, but I feel like there is so much behide it. What did they talk about?

“I can’t in good conscience let you go wandering around in this,” Mr. Smith says, touching Shelby’s shoulder again. “Why don’t I drive you home?”

“Drive me home?” Shelby repeats. Like, in his car?

“Of course.” Mr. Smith says it like it’s the most natural suggestion in the world. “You don’t live far, right?”
