A cold line of steel pressed itself to her throat, and her eyes flew open. Lae'zel was stood in front of her, her eyes narrowed.

"Do not struggle, you will only make it worse."

Shadowheart would have laughed if not for the dagger. She had little hope of fending off Lae'zel in the best of conditions, and this certainly wasn't that.

"You feel it as I do," Lae'zel said, voice certain. "The change is nearly on us. We must act quickly.

"Decided against the wyvern poison, then?" Shadowheart asked, willing her voice to be steady.

Lae'zel scoffed. "As if I would trust something so important to something as unreliable as poison given to us by istik." She leaned in, and Shadowheart could see how fever bright her eyes were. "No. I will kill you with my own hand. Then the others, and then myself. It will be quick. The others will not even wake." She said it as if it was a mercy Shadowheart should thank her for.

"So I'm the only one who gets to stare in the face of my own murderer, then?"
