On June 15, 2018, Shaker Aamer took part in a Close Guantánamo initiative marking 6,000 days of Guantánamo’s existence, and provided the following message:

"Tell Donald Trump: As long as Guantánamo is open, America will never be great again. And as long as America is committing injustice, America will never be great again. And as long as America has military posts all over the world, America will never be great again. And as long as America is supporting and helping dictators all over the world, America will never be great again."

As Shaker said at a protest outside the US Embassy on 11 January, the 14th anniversary of the opening of the prison, "We want everybody to know that today we are here not as brothers from Guantánamo [but] for one reason: It’s truly to bring justice back, to close Guantánamo once and for all."

Five former Guantánamo prisoners -- from L to R: Ruhal Ahmed, Moazzam Begg, Shafiq Rasul, Shaker Aamer and Asif Iqbal -- meet for the first time, since the release of Shaker Aamer in October, outside the US Embassy on 11 January 2016, the 14th anniversary of the opening of the prison, and hold a poster for the new Countdown to Close Guantánamo campaign. Shaker said beforehand, "Even though I've been free for two months, I haven't yet seen my fellow hostages from Guantánamo. This will be a momentous day when we gather for the first time to fulfill our ambition to see the closure of the prison and justice for our brothers still held there."
