belatedly jumping in on the ‘holla die waldfee’ discussion since i only just saw it to say: i agree with the general sentiment that it expresses a considerable degree of surprise; in addition, though, i think that it's fallen out of use and become somewhat quaint, which means that if used at all, it's most often in a dry voice and with ironic undertones. the best english equivalent i can come up with in my own usage would be 'holy catfish', i think :D

We’re finally having a week of cool weather (don’t worry, it’s supposed to go back up to an inferno next week. blech) and I am sooooo excited to haul out the long sleeves and the blazers and stockings and boots and everything wonderful about cold weather. I think this year, I’m going to indulge my 18th C. fetish and just walk around dripping with velvet, leather, taffeta, lace, and ruffles.
