I read Shallow Graves by Kali Wallace back in September, expecting to absolutely love it. I more like lukewarmed it. The premise is sound; a teen girl wakes up in a shallow grave not far from her house a year after she was murdered, with the power to know if anyone has ever killed another person, and the ability to then kill them with a touch. She then goes on a journey to find out what she is, how she became this way, if there are others like her. I would compare it to maybe Neil Gaiman’s aesthetic, if it was one of the first things he ever wrote.

The ending was somewhat unsatisfactory, not sad enough to be heartbreaking, but not happy or conclusive enough to be rounded out. I include it here because it falls more or less within the parameters of my working definition of Gothic stories, which is that a character finds themselves physically or mentally altered in some way, in a grim situation, and then must make something of it from there. 

This novel contains all the best and darkest elements of a fairy tale, including a dark ancient creature that could ‘fix’ the protagonist, but is far more likely to steal her soul, and an innocent ‘normal’ family that she can never return to because she is so changed by her ordeal. 

There is a lot of bodily horror in this story, which alone of course does not make it Gothic. But the protagonist’s struggle with her un-chosen bodily alteration, her journey among those who would do her harm, and her permanent removal from the world that she once knew, places it firmly in YA territory, and somewhat within my definition of the Gothic genre. Ultimately it was an impactful read, with good LGBT+ representation, and a thorough exploration of YA tropes of struggle, exploration and ultimate self-acceptance.
