“Love blooms in the in-betweens.”
She never understood what her mother meant by that. When she asked for clarification, she usually got that universal bane of all children: “You’ll understand when you’re older.”
But once, just once, her mother gave her a little more insight. “It’s natural to focus on the bloom,” she said, looking at a fresh juniberry in her hand. “The radiant color of the spores in the sunlight. But that’s not what makes the flower grow. It needs the stem and the leaves and the golden swaechaelm.” And she’d smiled at her. “Like with love.” She looked out over the Blossom Canyon in full bloom and said, “We look at the field and our eyes see the spores, but not the plant itself.”
She thought she’d got it then. She thought she’d understood.
But she didn’t fully realize until Shiro.
He wasn’t one for grand gestures. Maybe he was, and the war prevented him. But, in any case, he didn’t come to her with an impassioned love confession, desperate and pining. There wasn’t time for that.
It was a collection of little things:
His hand on her shoulder when she was sad. The way he held her hand and urged her to rest. The softness in his voice when he said, “Yes, Princess.” His smile when it was only the two of them. How often he’d stand beside her, when there was no need for him to do so. The juniberry made of folded paper that appeared on her vanity. The extra portion of nutrien and a surprise mug of kava, made just the way she liked it.
It was the little moments, in between all the plans and the missions and the battles. It was the care, the attention to what she wanted and needed, the support that he gave her.
All of this was what made love bloom in her heart, what brought her lips to his.
