Song Review: Van Morrison and Joey DeFrancesco - “Have I Told You Lately” (Live)

Anyone who’s ever sat around wishing Van Morrison would remake “Have I Told You Lately” as an uptempo, jazz duet - all two of them - are in luck.

Recorded for You’re Driving Me Crazy, Morrison’s new joint with Joey DeFrancesco and released on a live video, this recasting of the lovely, Avalon Sunset ballad is what you’d expect - unsuited, awkward and altogether ill-advised as Morrison trades vocals with daughter Shana Morrison.

With a punchy organ solo from DeFrancesco and a sinewy horn arrangement, this new version completes “Have I Told You Lately”’s long evolution from prayerful song to devotion of secular love.

And if Sound Bites hasn’t told you lately - it stinks.

BEHIND THE TITLE TRACKS with Shana Morrison

Shana Morrison--daughter of Van and a supremely gifted singer-songwriter in her own right--gave The Title Trackers an exclusive account of her approach to title tracks for her albums:

Whenever I put out an album, the most difficult part of the process (from writing the songs, to recording demos, to producing the album or choosing a producer, to artwork) is always coming up with an album title. I hate to say it, but I usually choose a song title just because I can't come up with anything else I like.  

I thought the song "Joyride" (2010) was a really strong statement, both musically and in the way the story was presented, so it seemed like a good opening track for a CD that represented Girl Power to me. The project was produced by my longtime friend and co-writer Kim McLean, so between the two of us, we were coming from a place of unbridled female energy.  it felt good to start with a Big Bang--the story of a very intense and unforgettable love affair--the album goes on to explore all of the other emotions and experiences that a woman might identify with (and men who love women can also appreciate).
