Bob Weir’s Final Shows Were “One of the Greatest Acts of Heroism I Will Ever See,” Dead & Company’s John Mayer Says

Bob Weir’s insistence on playing three shows with Dead & Company Aug. 1-3, 2025, while battling cancer “was one of the greatest acts of heroism I will ever see in my lifetime,” John Mayer said on the one-year anniversary of Weir’s final performance.

“What he had to overcome in order to pull that off won’t ever be fully known to anyone,” Mayer wrote on social media.

Weir died in January at 78 “after courageously beating cancer as only Bobby could. Unfortunately, he succumbed to underlying lung issues,” his family said at the time.

To Mayer, Weir’s final act was both a “spiritual transfer” as Dead & Company welcomed Billy Strings, Sturgill Simpson, Grahame Lesh & Trey Anastasio to the stage & the Grateful Dead co-founder’s “ultimate act of defiance.”

“The man you loved, whose music has given a more expansive inner life to us all, never backed down,” Mayer said.

“In his final shows, after 60 years, he lived up to every measure of a person he’d ever stood for. It’s a master class of a life lesson, & I’ll take it with me forever.”

Song Review: Grateful Dead - “The Other One” (Live, June 30, 1985)

As they celebrated their 20th birthday in 1985, the Grateful Dead got good and weird, particularly on summer tour and a freshly released performance of “The Other One” captures the gooey psychedelia nicely.

Relatively concise at less than seven minutes, it nevertheless has enough room for the band to taxi toward liftoff, for Phil Lesh to signal it with a rolling bass intro and for the band to make the most of the aural flight.

Bob Weir sings/screams passionately over the band’s revving motor powered by drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, whose individual parts are easily discernible on the perfect audio reproduction.

“The Other One” follows “Sugar Magnolia” ahead of the Sept. 18 release of Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, MD 6/30/85, a well-loved show that is sure to become a cherished official release.

Song Review: Grateful Dead - “Friend of the Devil” (Live - July 2, 1989)

Grateful Dead fans who yearned for surprises with song placements must’ve been giddy when the band, on July 2, 1989, in Massachusetts, opened the second set with “Friend of the Devil.”

As a bonus, the Gratefuls also fussed with the arrangement, playing the track nearly twice as fast as they normally did and giving Brent Mydland two solos, on which he employed fiddle and piano sounds.

The on-the-fly changes resulted in a couple of minor vocal gaffes.

But that hardly mattered, as this was a surprise gift wrapped in a 10-minute sonic package that still has impact 37 years later. And that’s likely why the good folks at GDHQ dug it out of the vault Aug. 1 to mark the 84th anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s birth.
