same man I'm probs getting it at midnight if it's possible. im so indifferent towards the books, but i met a lot of good friends through them and it's super nostalgic, middle school me would hate current me if i didn't read it.

It's not just about ITF per se but Tumblr in general. This community is doing a good job at being aware of the social issues, but we're not perfect here (as in, people don't always fully understand or take into account the context or the broader issues and their meaning). It's not unusual, for example, to have people erasing female characters and their importance just because they focus too much on a slash ship. It's not unusual for people to claim a female character is boring or one-dimensional but a male character with similar traits is not seen as problematic (because people still hold female characters to a higher standard, often subconsciously). It's not unusual to have people claim a show is sexist for having a vulnerable WOC (by ignoring the fact that the way white women are treated and the way WOC are is not the same). It's not unusual for people to view situations from their own, Western context without even acknowledging that it might be different for people around the world. Etc. 

None of this is the end of the world but this is why a discussion and, dare to say, being more informed about the issues and their meanign and their context and the history behind it is valuable. 

As for ITF, I agree that the show is doing a good job (mostly. There's still no sign that Kieren is not monosexual, but that's another thing). As for the fans, it's great that people are getting excited because of finally, representation!, and even about finding it hot or arousing (nothing wrong about it; it doesn't have to always be about metas and deep discussions and arguments. Sometimes, it can be about the beauty of those two men kissing). The thing is that "shipping" can sometimes get people sidetracked.

It's ok; I wasn't sure who you were responding to. 

I am not surprised by the lack of discussion (though hey, we are having a discussion now, and that's good, right?) This is Tumblr. Too many times, Tumblr people claim they care about issues such as representation but at the end of the day, some people's motives are less noble than this. It doesn't even have to be about the issues the show doesn't focus on (such as racism); it can be about the very thing the show does focus on and is praised for. For example, the way a canonically queer couple is sometimes discussed in the fandom, well, sometimes it does involve issues of representation but in some cases it boils down to fanservice and (borderline?) fetishism. Which... yeah.

theintoccabile has already written a much better response to liliaeth than i could but basically it boils down to the fact that realism still isnt an excuse. also i was wondering at no point did you suggest that kieren or jem or amy could have been a PoC? i mean, if what you’re worried about is the realism of the village racially, is amy even from roarton? i know she rose there but did she live there? no one seems to know her. so why couldn’t any of the three of them have been PoC? or all of them? or rick as well?

I am not sure you're responding to the right person (the comments can get all mixed up in reblogging). Because a) I never used the "realism" argument - in fact, I said it was a shitty excuse and b) I suggested Amy for WOC (and yes, she is from Roarton. In fact, all of the POC we meet are from Roarton, I believe. Including Maxine). Obviously, I am not saying only one POC per show is enough, but at least one of the main characters could have been a POC. Not just one-off characters like Amir. Kieren could have been a POC and/or Jem. Or all of them. Of course they could have been. But at least one prominent (non-villainous) POC character is better than none, and we don't have this in ITF.  

I think people are gushing about the positives because, again, it's not so common to see some of the things we see on ITF (and not portrayed in such a way) but yes, of course negatives should be talked about. The lack of POC representation is certainly one of those things.
