Sunset on Shangumukan Beach
As the sun goes down in a deep reddish-orange ball into the Arabian Sea, the people of Trivandrum head for the beach to enjoy the display.
Hundreds -- primary school pupils dressed in their smart uniforms and shepherded by teachers, office workers, retired couples, and youngsters just out for some fun -- gather on the shore to watch as the day ends.
And with them come the traders with their carts loaded with goodies, or the fresh ingredients with which to make the goodies -- chickpea snacks, corn on the cob, slices of fruit or good old candyfloss.
And among them all are the wandering salesmen, ready to convince you you need a balloon, or some bright gadget, or some snacks to get you through to dinner.
