The Emblem of Kazakhstan has the traditional form of a circle. This form close to perfection had special value for the nomad. It is a symbol of eternal and wise course of time, circulation of life in the nature. The central element which has incorporated the basic idea of the Kazakhstan Emblem is shanyrak – the round aperture crowning the dome of yurt. The smoke above shanyrak, visible from far away and promising warm reception seen to the traveler from time immemorial was a symbol of family well-being, peace and calmness.
They would have killed me a long time ago in this prison if people didn't know who I was and didn't defend me. They're afraid to torture and beat me because international organizations know about me. I'm grateful to the people and the organizations that are protecting me. I thank them with all my heart.
Kazakh poet and dissident Aron Atabek, currently held in solitary confinement in a maximum-security prison. In 2007, Atabek was convicted of organizing mass disorder against the demolition of the Shanyrak shantytown that resulted in the death of a police officer. His supporters believe the case against him was politically motivated. He was sentenced to 18 years in a labor camp. Atabek has always maintained his innocence and even rejected a government pardon if he would admit his guilt. (Radio Free Europe)
Shanyrak Riot in 2006.
Shanyrak - previously deserted area near Almaty was settled by kazakhs from rural areas in early 90s, seeking for a better future in Almaty they build mud huts and squatted abandoned barracks here since this densely-populated slum area has become one of the most crime ridden areas in Kazakhstan. A lot of houses still don't have a basic utilities like running water and electricity problems are quite common thing here. There's only two schools here and both of them are extremely overcrowded with 3 to 4 thousands students each.
In 2005 Residents of Shanyrak were promised that if president Nursultan Nazarbayev would be re-elected in upcoming elections they will be able to legalize their land and administration will develop a proper infrastructure in the township. Next year Almaty administration announced new residental area with shopping centers on the site of Shanyrak and ordered demolition of shacks. Resident of Shanyrak made barricades all around the township and prepared for fight with stones and molotov cocktails
In the end of July 2006 three hundred police officers attemped to remove barricades and arrest some of the resistance members, Police pushed back and were greeted with molotov cocktails, during the brawl three to five police officers were captured and crowd poured petrol on them and demanded to stop demolition. One of the police officers 24-years old who had suffered burns over roughly 70 percent of his body subsequently died on 26 July.
After failed attempt to evict residents then-Mayor of Almaty Imangali Tasmagambetov stopped slum clearance plan and promised that residents finally would be able to legalize their houses and announced construction of health care facilities around the township.
Despite all this even after five years nothing has changed, there is still no roads, no water, rats and garbage all over the streets.
