Y'all mind if I gush for a minute?
There's a detail in Incident on Ranger Seven so miniscule yet pure and utter genius I have to bring it up.
I'm talking about the painting right at the very end of the episode.
Notice anything... off? Yeah sure Gyrus is there but besides him? Like, oh I don't know, Antauri's coloring for example? How he looks kinda... mismatched?
It may seem like a graphical error...
...until you realize Gyrus is the author of this painting...
...and the last time we saw him was back in Season 1.
What really sells this for me is the fact the episode's script doesn't address this at all.
Like, you can't tell me this guy, who is botherline obsessed with the Hyperforce, didn't immediately notice the sudden color shift when the monkeys first met him in the episode.
... Considering the aforementioned obsession... it's questionable how Gyrus isn't aware of Antauri's new colors already. The episode doesn't give us an explanation, or even a hint of an explanation. So it could be anything, him not being interested in keeping up as he's quite literally living in a fantasy, not having the option to keep up, or the team spent so little time on Shuggazoom between Antauri's resurrection and this episode (legit only staying home until they trained Jinmay to protect Shuggazoom, then yeeting themselves to outer space), very few citizens noticed or talked about the color shift. Whatever the reason, it doesn't change anything so MOVING ON-
When the monkeys confront him about Chiro's kidnapping, Gyrus, painting a random dog in an oriental costume, is all cool and innocent. Granted, he has to act like that because he indeed has Chiro locked up, so he doesn't get the chance to question the color change out loud... but heck, the writers could have just given us 2 seconds of Gyrus looking at Antauri confused or something among those lines to suggest Gyrus' unawareness, but no...
What we got instead is Nova gesturing towards Antauri while referring to him by name. Basically, she silently told Gyrus that yes, this is still Antauri, he just looks different now, while simultaneously not implying anything about Gyrus' unawareness to the audience.
As the Hyperforce goes off to investigate and Gyrus is left alone, still recharging his brain (... whatever the hell that means...), he has some time to spare.
We see throughout the episode that the majority of the dude's paintings are negative, usually featuring crying animals. Meaning this one happy painting of him with the Hyperforce is special to him. Upon realizing it's out of date, he picks it up again and begins painting over Antauri's black self, starting from the head, as any artist would.
But, given the rest of the episode, he doesn't get enough time to finish it, so he leaves the painting hanging there for later and goes do the stuff we witness on-screen.
And with whatever the heck happened to Gyrus in the end, this painting is left unfinished on the author's easel, for who knows how long.
Another really smart thing the show does is when we get the close-up of this self-insert painting, the camera zooms towards Gyrus. Nothing is dragging the viewer's eyes to Antauri. His mismatched body is right there in your face, and yet, the show ignores it, treating it as an insignificant background detail.
AND ONE MORE NOTEWORTHY THING-
The pictures of the monkeys in the painting are recycled from the very end of The Sun Riders episode, meaning that someone on the art team had to go through the extra trouble of recoloring Antauri, but only partially. Heck, that someone even lightened Antauri's body a little, implying that Gyrus was already on it when the episode's main script called.
Whoever's idea was this is a total madlad and all the kudos to them.
Gawd... the attention to detail in this show is one of the best things about it. This random little misshap that could be written off as an error has so much meaning behind it it's insane...
