Hiya. I've seen you mention music a couple times in your posts. Did you study it in college as your major since you mentioned sight reading and ethnomusicology? I did so just fun seeing others talk about it :)
yeah lmao I did study music, almost became a music studies double major (my univ restructured the music (BA) major my like second year there by the time I started thinking about doubling, but it kind of worked out bc they made it less Western art music/musicology focused and more ethnomusicology focused, which I liked), I was uhh... only missing my final project/paper, which I didn’t finish bc of real bad executive dysfunction and I like put off graduating for a whole year bc I “was gonna do it” while I was out and about and working, but then never did, and by the one year mark I finally just... opted to downgrade my double major to a minor so I could formally graduate and get my expensive paper.
But I took a lot of ethnomusicology classes and also most of the friends I made in college were thru the music dept bc the classes tended to be smaller & more intimate than my other major, which was mostly lectures, and like ethno was a good intersection of like cultural studies AND music AND like other schools of thought and I liked it a lot. My senior year I took a seminar class that was just called sth generic but it turned out to be about musicals and I really liked that.
I also took piano for like... so many years as a child. took the ABRSM piano exams too, got my Diploma in that. But as I mentioned by and by, my musicanship skills is by far one of my “years of academy training... wasted” moments lmao, I was never stellar at musicianship and sadly my skills have only degraded with time and lack of practice. I’m still better than your average layperson, but like... the thing abt running in musician circles is like, you’re either stellar/put in the work to be rly good, or you’re kind of nada, you know? I mean my school’s dept wasn’t bad bc they tried to be good abt things, but apparently there was hella drama in the piano dept (and...other instrument departments?) that I only heard of by the by from ppl and I mostly like *that meme of the monkey puppet looking one way and then looking away*
