Running regular backups is important for home users, but for business its essential losing even a small fraction of your most important data, for a brief period of time, could still be a real disaster.

You could try to protect yourself by copying/cloning files to local drives, but that takes time and effort. It also leaves you potentially vulnerable to fire and hardware failure, even theft which is why automatically uploading your files to a cloud backup service is often a better idea.

Choosing the right backup solution can seem tricky, as there's a lot to consider. How much storage space do you really need, for instance? Some accounts cover one person or computer only, while others support as many as you need – which is right for you?

File access is important. How do you access your data? Is there mobile support? Do you get file sync, or file sharing options? Does the service handle just about everything itself, or would you like to fine-tune it by the use of a thick client app which controls backup scheduling, bandwidth throttling and more?

Dropbox aren’t the only company to suffer this fate, recently Yahoo suffered one of the largest, but didn’t tell their customers for over two years!

Why is it then that Kaizen can keep data secure when far larger companies can’t …. well there are a few reasons, not least is the fact that we are way smaller and as such remain under the radar of all the people who want to make a name for themselves by accessing information, again unlike the large companies, we don’t store any kind of banking, personal or financial information on our equipment, only the data of creative companies and as our clients are creative they tend to come up with their own ideas rather than hack into our servers to see what their competitors are doing - which they wouldn’t be able to do of course, as from the moment it leaves your device to the moment it its the storage system its fully encrypted, to xxx standards in fact, so they would need know an encryption key which is as long as your arm … leg, and the legs of all your business colleagues.

We take our clients data very seriously, so seriously that we don’t have access to it, its stored in our own highly secured datacenter on our own equipment with strong firewalls which instantly alert us to any suspicious activity.

It's easy to confuse online storage services as being the same as online backup services. Some larger companies use backup as a term to sell their services. However, there is a difference. An online backup service acts as your backup, while an online storage service acts as your primary storage – like a virtual hard drive. Both services store your information online and can meet the 3-2-1 backup strategy. What is the 3-2-1 strategy? Always maintain at least three copies of any essential file stored on at least two different storage media with one of those media stored off-site. Three copies. Two media formats. One media format stored off-site.

Unfortunately, the reverse isn't true: A true online backup service can't be your online storage service. Since an online backup service's priority is to be the second copy of your data, the files don't remain on the servers indefinitely. If you delete a file from your computer, the file disappears from your account as well, though there is generally a grace period of 30 days. On the other hand, online storage services store files forever. Your files are only deleted from the account if you log into your account through a web browser and manually delete the files. In this way, the service acts more as a virtual hard drive for your data than a backup service.

People are at the stage now where they think anything stored in the cloud is safe … unfortunately the reverse is true, we have already outlined the deliberate hacking which can occur, what if a disgruntled employee decides to wreck a business by deleting data, are you covered? Is there versioning? Usually the answer is yes but occasionally it isn’t.

Can it be restored? What time frame is involved? Kaizen’s Sharesies product is not only encrypted and has a comprehensive versioning system but it can also be shared to individuals or groups on either a permanent or one off situation.
