My best treasure was a honest to goodness old fashioned NY #blackandwhitecookie! SC has never had one, so I need to share! @ZarosBakery #sharetheawesome #NYBlackandWhite #halfmooncookies #foodporn #nostalgia https://www.instagram.com/p/B9A40t2hW11/?igshid=12f4k8nescvu
Welcome back to my 2nd attempt at keeping an annual post series going. Free of the extreme circumstances that brought this series grinding to a halt last year I’m confident that I’ll break last years record of putting out 3 of these. So here’s the January charts from my Last.fm profile!
Some notes, After month after month of playing my Skinny Lister collection on repeat, I made a concerted effort this month to shuffle the master playlist for once and it’s resulted in some very interesting appearances on this list (including one from my best mates ex which I’m gonna enjoy having to explain next time we meet up ;) ).
The list isn’t the most detailed snapshot because of my 1 song per artist rule, which I put in place to avoid presenting the repetitive listening stats that only an aspergers diagnosis could provide (I’m allowed to make that joke!). So what’s not clear is that half of Alice Nicholls’ EP makes up my true top 5 this month with Get Some Learning & Deluge being at numbers 2 & 5 respectively.
That out the way, here’s the list!
#. Artist Name - Song Title (Album Title)
1. Alice Nicholls - One Flew Over (Kind Quiet Riots)
2. Ninja Sex Party - Heat of the Moment (Under The Covers II)
3. Elton John - Are You Ready For Love [Remix] (Diamonds)
4. Belinda Carlisle - Heaven is a Place on Earth (Heaven on Earth)
5. Beans On Toast - The Unlikely Gymnast (Cushty)
6. Biffy Clyro - Folding Stars (Puzzle)
7. Paramore - Fake Happy (After Laughter)
8. Metallica - Spit Out the Bone (Hardwired…To Self Destruct)
9. Machine Head - Davidian (Burn My Eyes)
10. Bastille - Good Grief (Wild World)
11. Frank Turner - I Still Believe (England Keep My Bones)
12. Billy Bragg - Northern Industrial Town (William Bloke)
13. Jasmine Kennedy - 446230 (It Made My Teeth Hurt)
14. Skinny Lister - Beat It From The Chest (The Devil, The Heart & The Fight)
15. Weezer - Island In The Sun (The Green Album)
16. Dexy’s Midnight Runners - Jackie Wilson Said (Too-Rye-Ay)
17. Arctic Monkeys - Mardy Bum (Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not)
18. Fountains of Wayne - Stacy’s Mom (Welcome Interstate Managers)
19. Coheed & Cambria - The Suffering (Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness)
20. Travis - Turn (The Man Who)
Go Listen To This! February 2017 (LGBT* History Month Edition)
Hello and welcome back to February! Apologies for the downtime over the last couple of days, sadly I lost a weeks worth of site data during that downtime so I’ve got some gaps to fill, mainly re-writing this article. So without further ado, here’s a special edition of Go Listen To This! Where everything recommended is either an LGBT* artist, or a song about an LGBT* related issue.
ARTIST: JASMINE KENNEDY
Links: Website, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, SoundCloud, Bandcamp In what I hope is another edition of totally redundant suggestions for regular readers of this blog, I’m gonna give a shout out to another incredibly talented mate of mine. I got to know Jasmine personally long before I ever got the chance to sample her songs, and her music was hyped to the Nth degree (makes sense considering that her significant other, Beccy, is also my best friend and former housemate). Gladly I can report that Jasmine’s music lives up to the hype and then some! I implore you to go to her Bandcamp page and listen to “446230” (from It Made My Teeth Hurt) and “Percy Anderson” (from A Love Song To Finance). A hauntingly beautiful voice, the guitar chops that compliment it perfectly, top notch songwriting skills and a quality human being to boot, Jasmine deserves a lot of love and I hope if you’ve not given her some yet then this’ll set you on your way.
ALBUM: THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A ‘PROTEST SINGER’ (EP) BY GRACE PETRIE
Links: Website, Download
Speaking of redundant recommendations! Although it took me a while to discover Grace Petrie, I know now just how well respected she is, and her abilities more than back up that reputation. This is her latest EP and it’s hook is an issue that is especially relevant in the days of hard brexit (vom) & President Trump (vom). Strongly suggest “I Wish The Guardian Believed That I Exist”, “Nobody Knows That I’m A Fraud” an amazing song about Grace’s struggle with imposter syndrome, and of course with it being LGBT* History Month, I can’t not suggest checking out the fantastic “Pride”. If you’re after a 21st century version of the politically aware acoustic fire that Billy Bragg made famous (and endorsed by the big man himself) then you’ll find it right here.
Finally, to round up this LGBT* History Month special, here’s 6 tracks to go look for on your streaming service of choice!
Tegan & Sara - Now I’m All Messed Up (from Heartthrob)
Trivium - And Sadness Will Sear (from The Crusade) “a song about the abduction and murder of Matthew Sheperd”
George Michael - Faith (from Faith)
Mary Lambert - Secrets (from Heart On My Sleeve)
Billy Bragg - Sexuality (from Dont Try This At Home) “A sex-positive, anti-homophobia song”
It’s the last weekend of the month, which means it’s time for the first monthly edition of my personal top 20. Brought to you as ever via the stats presented on my Last.FM profile. So the rule is still the same, no artist can appear twice on the same chart. With the formalities out the way, here’s the top 20 for January 2017.

Skinny Lister - Carry (The Devil, The Heart & The Fight)
