If you know how Paul is supposed to look in the AU...how does John look like?

we imagine sharkjohn looking basically like john did in mmt, just without the sideburns lol

this picture has the right vibe: 

mersharks are not genetically capable of growing body hair (including facial hair), since it would make them less streamlined in the water. but for our au purposes, though, he still has head hair because we didn’t want him to be bald lmao

also he’s a leopard shark, so his tail looks like this. he also has some spots on his skin where his torso fades into his shark tail, and a few spots on his arms and chest.

I have a headcanon that Mershark John needs glasses bc he's used to looking at things underwater

omg well i’m happy to tell you your headcanon is actually canon lmao

over time paul starts to notice that john can’t see very well, and that’s part of the reason why he chomps on basically everything, because he can’t tell if it’s edible or not. he also squints a lot, and at first paul assumes it’s because he’s confused by human stuff, but eventually he learns that john is just fucking blind lmao

paul starts him off with a pair of basic drugstore reading glasses and john freaks out, he doesn’t like the feeling of having something on his face, but he admits it helps a little bit. after a while when john is more accustomed to human things, paul finds a way to get john actual prescription glasses that he has to wear on land, but he can see just fine underwater 

being on land doesn’t have a negative effect on his other senses, though. he has a superior sense of smell and hearing, and those are almost magnified now that they aren’t muffled by the water. paul can cut himself shaving and john could be in the living room and ask if he’s okay. 

mersharks aren’t attracted to human blood tho, since they are part human themselves. like when he bit paul it was a defense mechanism, not a result of hunger. his diet consists only of fish and he is never tempted to eat humans

yesterday i read the wonderful mershark john fic and I already miss him :( is there any other random information about the au you'd like to tell us about?? are there going to be more characters we know in the fic?? thanks!

omg!! first of all, thank you for reading and taking the time to send this!! i love talking about sharkjohn haha this au is honestly huge, kenzie (@twinkpaul​) and i have been talking about it for over two years now. 

yes there are other familiar characters! ringo and george are paul’s friends (who eventually learn about john, with mixed results), and stu is also a mershark and a former casual lover of john’s. 

mersharks are very vanilla! but they are also have a very casual view of sex. it’s not until john meets paul that he learns monogamous relationships are even a thing. he also learns humans do a lot more than put their dicks in each other and fall asleep.

(yes they can have sex. it takes them a very long time to get to this point lmao. if anyone is savvy enough to find it, i once long ago answered a question about their sex life in detail but i’m too embarrassed to link it again)

it takes them a long time to adapt to each other’s worlds. it becomes harder when john is healthy and wants to get out of the tub and explore, so paul has to find creative ways for john to get around without destroying his home. he also has to find ways to keep john from drying out so he doesn’t have to stay in the tub all the time. 

paul is a vegetarian so he has a hard time feeding john, and has to come to terms with the fact that he can’t feed a shark salads and tofu. he also learns he can no longer keep fish for pets. 

he eventually upgrades his bathtub so john has a better place to sleep, but john likes paul’s bed the best.

paul likes to kiss john’s gills. john thinks it’s weird at first, but his gills are super sensitive so he likes it too. 

john is fascinated by paul’s legs and feet, but he takes a particular interest in paul’s leg hair. 

they have a lot of adventures together and a long future ahead of them!! like i said, this au is huge, so it’s hard to narrow it down to just a few things to share, but hopefully you enjoy this! if you have any specific questions let me know! i never get tired of talking about him and i hope to publish a new oneshot about him soon!

so as much as we all like being nasties w/ the other questions, i'm genuinely curious about some of the world-building too in the mershark au...if you've got it figured out, it's OK if not lol. like stu is another mershark? do others know about john's on-land adventures and interaction with humans, would that be something they're OK with? i just have...questions haha

omg these questions are much easier to answer without worrying about facing public judgement haha 

@twinkpaul and i have put a lot thought into their world, but it’s been over the span of at least two years, so i’m probably forgetting some things? i’ll answer to the best of my ability 

yes, stu is another mershark! i mentioned in another ask that john used to hook up with him casually, but we’ve also discussed a scenario in which stu’s feelings toward john are a little more than casual. so when john eventually wants to introduce paul to his friends, that creates sort of an awkward tension between them

mersharks know about humans, but kind of view them in the same way that we view sharks: they are extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. they know humans are responsible for the ocean pollution, for instance, so they just kind of think of humans as these careless, destructive creatures. however, humans also kind of have a mythological status, since the mersharks live in deeper water and very few have ever seen a human

so john and paul’s relationship would be viewed as pretty taboo from both sides. since paul rescued john and cared for him, john learns right away that paul is not dangerous, but the other mersharks aren’t necessarily as willing to accept that. john has pretty much decided to move in with paul and live on land as much as he can, so he’s not too worried about what the other mersharks think of their relationship

paul takes john back to the ocean a lot though so he can hunt and get some exercise, so john is free to visit them if he wants, but he tends to stay close to paul. paul will sit on some rocks or a pier or something while john swims around, and maybe he’ll bring along his guitar to play with while he waits, and john will bring paul pretty things that he finds underwater 

which reminds me, this picture is pretty much how we imagine paul in the au:

also i have another mershark!au question: how did ringo and george find out? and is john aware of what music is or was he fascinated when he first heard paul play something? im sorry i just read your sharkjohn tag and now i'm obsessed what have you guys done

i actually don’t remember the specifics of how ringo and george found out? i think they meet john before they find out that he’s a mershark lmao. by this time, he uses a wheelchair to get around on land, and paul is able to hide john’s tail by putting a blanket in his lap or something, while he can wear cute sweaters to hide his gills and the fins on his arms. so ringo and george can meet paul’s totally human bf (who they probably think is super weird) before paul eventually drops the mershark bombshell lol. but i mean, john still has his shark teeth and everything, so they probably think there’s something.. fishy about him (pun intended, okay??)... so it’s probably not too surprising in the end lol

anyway yes, john is totally aware of music! mersharks are very musical creatures, so he sings, and he has his own little like underwater instrument (it doesn’t sound quite right on land but that’s okay, because it turns out to be very similar to a guitar and he picks up on that quickly). one day he takes paul into the water so he can hear john play his mershark instrument and paul falls in love all over again lol

hello! i have a question about mershark john! how does he feel about paul? is he attracted to humans?

he feels very sorry for paul at first, because he can’t imagine what terrible trauma paul must have gone through when his tail got split in half :((( 

it takes him a very long time to understand the concept of legs, and he can’t stop calling them paul’s “tails” for a while. like, john is totally aware that paul is human, but since mersharks and humans have never really interacted, john is completely unfamiliar with human anatomy and is often very confused by it. but he’s not really bothered by it, he definitely thinks paul is attractive

the one thing he really has to get used to his paul’s body hair. john doesn’t have any body hair at all, so he’s confused and kind of grossed out at the thought of paul having some kind of black algae growing all over him
