Juvenile sharp-tailed sandpiper . . . Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, Smyrna, Delaware . . . 11/9/20 Content over quality. In short, this is a very lost baby. An Asian shorebird, its normal migration route extends from Siberia down to Australia and New Zealand. One was last spotted in Delaware in 2002, and before that, in 1993. This one was first seen on November 7. Many, many people visited from surrounding states (while social distancing) and confirmed that it was staying near a flock of dunlins in Raymond Pool, regardless of tide. I went on November 8 to see it, but no luck. The position of the sun made it too difficult to scan much of Raymond Pool by the time I arrived at 2pm. So I got my butt up at 5:30 a.m. the next morning for better lighting and plenty of time to wait for the bird to appear. Voila, I saw it shortly after the morning fog dissipated! It and the dunlins were pretty far out the entire 3 hours I watched them; this was the best shot I could get with the distance.
