“are they dead? did you kill them?”
“Doubt it,” the Doctor said, pulling on his spectacles and glancing around at the seemingly empty room. The creatures that he’d been chasing a moment ago had vanished when he tried to scan them with the sonic, disappearing seemingly into thin air - but he could sense their presence in the flicker of movement at the corner of his eye, in the way his spine crawled with a feeling of unspoken dread. And the smell of pineapple--
--no, that was the human. Glancing around at him, the Doctor gave him a troubled frown. “They’re still in here somewhere. Hiding. And I have no idea what they are.” His fingers ghosted across the jagged hole in his jacket, where one of them had attempted to take a large chunk out of his arm. “Apart from the fact that they’re hungry.”
In here somewhere, but where? Camoflage? Time travel? Or...
...his eyes fell on the shadows in the corners of the room, shadows that hadn’t been there a moment ago. “Ah,” he said. “A simple change of waveform, switching to absorbing the entire visible spectrum. Clever, very clever.” He backed up a step, moving closer to the stranger, hovering somewhat protectively. “I think we should stay very, very still,” he whispered.
