May or may not do a fancier promo thing later but I’m @onesyllable now.
(I will be back soon. I’m in the process of archiving this blog and moving to a new one. I think that’s just the change I need as the muse hasn’t left me but I haven’t had much energy or enthusiasm for anything lately. Thanks for your patience and best wishes in the meantime.)

“I…. No… I….” Lucy stared at her with wide, unsure eyes. Eyes full of fear and confusion and anxiety…. Eyes that were both searching for answers in this stranger before her, and filling with tears as she found none. “I don’t…. I’m not supposed to be here. I’m not…. Not meant to be on the Earth… My husband is going to… Oh GOD! He’s going to kill me if he finds out…. I have to get back… I have to get back to the Valiant, now!” She insisted, panicking as her mind raced and her questions stumbled out clumsily as a train of muddled thought.
‘Not meant to be on Earth’. Those were magic words. It wouldn’t have been appropriate to smile about this, given the poor woman’s obvious distress but this was shaping up to be one of the rare occasions where Gwen resolved she might belive in fate after all. Before she’d seen her first alien, however, Gwen had done police work including a number of domestic abuse cases.
The Valiant was another mention Gwen clung to in trying to sort out the pieces without upsetting the stranger any further. Surely, she couldn’t be talking about the aircraft that was in all the news. “Listen,” she said in her most reassuring voice, taking the woman’s hand and giving it a very careful squeeze. “I can help you. It’s my job: I’m police- special ops, sort of -first, I just need to know if you’re in danger. Would your husband actually hurt you if he were here?”

Klaus hadn’t ever expected that he would be coming back to Cardiff. It’d been years since he’d last shown his face around and it’d been longer than that since he’d had any sort of contact with anyone who’d have managed to come around to his emotional side. However, upon his initial reaction to the unchanging landscape, and the boredom he felt the moment he’d landed; the ancient hybrid made his way to the local haunt that he’d helped and invested into years prior. ❝ Years of being gone, one would think that this place would change… ❞ he sighed, settling into a seat at the bar, ordering up a neat scotch and taking his conversation and feelings into each sip. It didn’t take him long to realise that he was being watched; something that he’d grown accustomed to after 1,000 years, yet still unnerving and bothersome. Especially when the eyes behind the watching were ones that belonged to a familiar face. A familiar and sometimes quite annoying face. When she slid from her own seat and began to make her way over to him, Klaus ordered up another two scotches and placed one before her. ❝ Take a seat, Love. I’m sure you’re quite famished having ventured from one side of the bar to the other. ❞ He gave her a sideways glance, smirking just slightly as he saw the recognition in her face. ❝ Yes, it’s amazing what one remembers after being gone for so very long. ❞ Clinking his own glass against hers, the hybrid nodded congenially before taking a sip of his drink. ❝ To what do I owe the pleasure of your enigmatic company? ❞
She’d faced this exact problem before. Following- approaching someone and getting their attention was simple enough but, as Gwen was the one making the first move in this case, there was really no good way to start demanding answers from a not-quite stranger. The half-question, half-accusation she’d had ready- ‘How do I know you?’ -no longer seemed appropriate. Still, she’d look like an even bigger idiot if she didn’t say something.
“You’re...” she hesitated, processing something odd between a senseless flash of memory and an embarassingly delayed reaction. It was as if the tiny chime emitted when the two glasses touched had triggered something much bigger. Upsetting as it was to still not be able to identify the man by name nor understand how she ever could have forgotten- that face cleary wasn’t one you’d erase from your thoughts willingly -Gwen knew then and there that they’d done something like this before and even in the midst of intent concentration, she had to save the situation somehow and keep him there long enough to sort out the puzzle.
She narrowed her eyes at the drink she’d been given with a sickening notion in mind. She signaled the barman and pressed with her best smile, “Can I have the same Scotch in a different glass, please?” That sorted, she figured it was better to appear rude than to be fooled twice and finally found a good line to shoot back, “You’re saying I’m enigmatic?”
Torchwood, the “secret” organisation.
tinyfaries:
Ang smiled when Gwen waved back, letting out a soft giggle. Her glow turned blue when Gwen had said she missed her, and the fairy flitted from her head to her hand, hugging her thumb tightly.
Her human had been busy. Ang had understood that. But it was much better when Gwen was paying proper attention to her. Much better!
Tiny as she was, Angharad gave warm and truly reassuring hugs and Gwen couldn’t be more grateful at the moment. She might not be willing to admit it but she’d needed the distraction as well. The case wasn’t going to solve itself but Gwen staring at old, useless info and forcing back tears over it wasn’t helping either. “Been awhile since we had lunch together,” she said, more of an offer than a musing, really. With her free hand, she set her computer into sleep mode and grabbed her handbag. “Would you let me eat some of it this time?” She teased, already starting to feel better.
offershope:
“Yes it’s a possibility.” Barry rose both brows slightly. If she wasn’t asking him to be her personal travel assistant then he wasn’t entirely sure of what he could really do for her. Until she started to speak again about the weapons. “So you want to use us to look after your stuff, basically.” It was less of a question and much more of a statement. At least she had the right idea, giving the stuff to the Flash Team - to use the repurposing to make something good out of what used to be harmful. “We’ve got a storage unit at the Lab, if you want to use it.”
While the world obviously needed heroes- super and otherwise -Gwen believed S.T.A.R. Labs to be a reliable base housing a small but brilliant and respectable team that might have even been cut out for Torchwood if only they’d met a few years earlier and under different circumstances. In the absence of her own former base and coworkers, she’d trust Team Flash- or whatever they liked to call themselves -to make the right calls sorting out the equipment from the old Torchwood cache she’d recently raided just outside of Central City. “I’d like that,” she said finally, having paused not from hesitance but in an effort to not look quite as enthusiastic as she truly felt- they were professionals after all. “I haven’t brought it all with me, just a couple of pieces I’d like to show you. If you’re still happy to help after that, I’ll get you the coordinantes to where the rest is hidden.”
tinyfaries:
Ang gave a small squeak when Gwen flinched. Obviously she had startled her. The tiny fairy scooted her way down to trying and look at Gwen in the face and waved. “Jen!”
The details of the unsolved case still weighed heavy on her heart but Gwen thought of Angharad as her own child sometimes and now found it easy enough to wave back, wriggling her fingers playfully and putting on a warm smile for the benefit of the fae. “I’ve missed you,” she said, although it truly hadn’t been such a long time since they’d last conversed, she did often make an effort to keep the more upsetting detais of her job hidden which had led to her uncharacteristic silence and distance this week.
harwoods-haulage:
“Haha, course it isn’t!” He laughed and wrapped his arm around Gwen’s waist, holding her close against his body. This was such a romantic gesture, he should probably do something to show Gwen how much he appreciates it. “Hey, how about we make a day of it? How does… Dinner at that restaurant you like, sound?”
Well, it would certainly be nice to replace the dessert she’d let spoil earier. In Rhys’ arms, Gwen was positively beaming. “Sounds amazing,” she assessed, hesitant to clarify, “But that’s it, okay? We keep trying to give more and we’ll have no cash and no standards left by time the wedding’s ready.” Somehow, with that concept alone, she’d even managed to excite herself. Things at home were getting better and she’d just have to keep it that way.
@tinyfaries
Angharad flew over to Gwen and landed on her head with a soft peep.
She’d been focused on her work intently enough that even that tiny peep from her fairy caused her to flinch. Not wanting Ang to worry about the ongoing case and hoping not to disturb her balance with much further movement, Gwen closed the tab she’d been staring at and used her friendliest, most reassuring tone instead,
everybodyelsedying:
“R-Really? You…You mean it?” Ashildr was used to being left behind or being told to leave because of what she was. She clung to what Gwen said for fear she might take it back. “I live in a hut. I saw those structures. I’ve seen here. I don’t think I will complain about wherever it is you live.” She laughed a little.
“I’ll learn the language. I’ll learn anything – I’m a fast learner,” And she was used to having a lot of time to work on learning and navigating new skills.
Ashildr picked up her pace closing the space between herself and Gwen. She reached for the other woman’s hand and squeezed it. “Thank you,” She said honestly with openness in her face.
She feared the Doctor. If he appeared, no doubt he would force her back to her proper time. She hoped that would never come to pass.
The last time Gwen had seen this much genuine gratitude and relief on someone’s face, she was pretty sure she’d still been with the police. Torchwood had many secrets and, although it was certainly for the best, it stung a bit that most of the people they’d saved could never be allowed to remember it.
They hadn’t known each other long and that made Gwen’s desperation seem a little less rational but she didn’t care. She was prepared to fight for Ashildr and there wasn’t anything wrong with clinging to someone who needed her help, not when she couldn’t stand to be alone either.
She squeezed Ashildr’s hand back and put on her most reassuring smile, strained but not faked this time, only letting go to answer her comms. “Hold on,” she said, asking for Ashildr’s patience and willing Jack to slow down as he spoke on the other end of her headset. “I did not steal the police car. World’s ending, okay, it can only attract so much attention.”
Thinking fast, she took a few steps away from Ashildr and covered her ear with one hand to hopefully muffle her boss’ new orders. “I’ve got to run home for something but I’ll check that house on the way, yeah?” She’d realised just then that only Andy had seen her with Ashildr. If she erased some of the CCTV footage and brought the translator back in a reasonable time, the others might never have to know and would never have the chance to argue that the Viking girl should be sent back to her own time.
She muted her comms and grinned for her new friend’s benefit. “Fancy another ride?”
AU where Gwen gave her daughter up for adoption (considering the Children of Earth and First Born canon that she’s gone into hiding as people have tried to kill or at least interrogate her and Torchwood is all but gone); she wanted what was best for Anwen and knew she couldn’t give it with her current lifestyle. So fast forward to 2017 when Anwen- or whatever name her adoptive parents have chosen -is about six or seven and Gwen is feeling both safe and sentimental enough to try to reach out to her and your muse either helps her do this or explains what a dangerous and terrible idea this is- consider the emotional consequences.
Bonus angst if she tries hiding this from Rhys (who was definitely wishing they could have kept her all along I mean...)

“Yay!” John grinned - a large, lopsided smile plastering itself across his face. That was great!
“This means I won’t be lonely for once. I get sad without my dog, you know. I miss her - especially when I have to spend loads of time alone.” He rambled, walking (more like stumbling) with Gwen, even leaning his weight on her to make moving easier.
“But you’re my friend, so I won’t be lonely, right? It’ll be like having Clara, but you’re a human, and you don’t sleep in my bed, so… Okay, it isn’t much like Clara at all. Whatever. I love you anyway. You’re the best, Gwen.”
“I like to think I’m better for conversation as well,” Gwen mused somewhat playfully, appreciating the sentiment a great deal more than she did the comparison to John’s beloved dog. Still, it was probably best to keep him focused on the positive.
“Who takes care of Clara when you’re away?” She asked, holding tight to John’s arm in one hand so he wouldn’t wander off while her other hand sorted out the cash and finally offered the new water bottle John’s way.
