Just to let you know, a Gender bent version of Swan Lake has been done and is fantastic, it’s by the dance company New Adventures and is choreographed by one of the greatest (if not the greatest) British Choreograph Matthew Bourne.
I am vaguely aware of it, as in I've heard of it but I haven't done much research on it. I chose SF because 1) I lived there and I know the theater where the company dances and I have been to the ballet multiple times 2)SF would be the kind of company to bring that reinterpretation to American audiences, 3)They feature their male dancers a lot in their programs, as more than just props for the women.
Also, I've mentally employed Wayne McGregor as choreographer for my version. Another Brit. And one of my favorites.
I picked things that were familiar to me because I didn't want to get too caught up in the research. That tends to kill my stories.
