He has to laugh. It’s supposed to signify amusement, but he accomplishes that goal only barely. It’s a cracked and hollow thing that hurts his ribs, cracked as they themselves are. He does not wince. Holmes may know anyway. 

“Sorry, I’ll get to your question in a second,” he says, false smile still on his face, not even remotely sorry. “It’s just - you’re asking me. And here you made everyone think you knew it all.” Sebastian’s baiting him - he’s property of a genius of his own. He wouldn’t say that he understands, would barely say that he knows how any of it works. But everyone’s dangerous in their own way, and the only way Sebastian would win this is if he’s hundreds of meters away with a rifle, and even then - even then, the playing field isn’t entirely level. 

God, he’d love to be in that position right now. Sherlock captivated Jim. Hadn’t made him literally a captive, of course, but it’s enough that he’d taken his interest as such. Sebastian wouldn’t dare kill Sherlock for that very reason, but he wants to. Has for a while. It’s probably jealousy. 

“I’ll break it down nice and simple for you, shall I? You will never measure up. There may not be any reason for you to follow the law, but you acknowledge they exist and you work with them. That’s your problem. Here’s the choice: either you live in a cage - maybe it’s so large you don’t see the bars often but it’s still a cage - or you take the cage away entirely. Maybe you still have to interact with the bars, but it does not contain you. Do you see the choice now? Do you see which is better?”

He might not, might have arguments, but it’s not like Sebastian’s going to listen. “Mr. Holmes, I’m sure you’ve seen my record, but let me remind you of something. I shot through one of ‘my own’ against orders because it was the right choice. I have never regretted that and I never will. But it was wrong because there were rules. Take those rules away, and I am infinitely more productive. I am infinitely better off. Do you understand now? I don’t care about measures that could be meant to protect me. I will die one day. I will die one day soon and that does not bother me at all. If I am unable to protect myself, then why should I not die? Do you understand?”

He leans back, body protesting. His false smile reappears to cover the pain. “I don’t expect you to, though. I don’t think I can make you understand anything you don’t want to let into your thick skull. That’s why I’d use the Barrett for you. It’s anti-materiel. .50 BMG, I think, just to make sure. This isn’t a threat, by the way. Nor a promise. I’m just explaining my thought process. Maybe it’ll help you figure this out. Maybe it’ll get me killed faster. I’m not going to place bets on which it is.”
